Even Early Birds Need Coffee by Reba - January 2019 Scholarship Essay
I would have to say I am more of a morning person than I am a night owl. The catch, however, is I still must have my coffee before my brain wakes up fully. I love to wake up, curl up on the couch, and enjoy a few minutes of solitude before the rest of the house wakes up. Just me and the dogs, relaxing in front of the fireplace, enjoying each warm drop of liquid motivation.
Once I have fully woken up, it is time to get to work. Babies up, husband up and out the door, dishes, laundry, babies to school and sitter, off to school…it is never ending. Once at school, the brain-work begins. Memorization, lectures, reading, again….it is never ending. I am going to school to be a registered nurse, which takes a lot of brain power. Being a morning person makes it a little bit easier. If I was a night owl, I would not be fully ready to take in all the information until later in the day.
Even on off-school days, I am more productive in the daytime than the evening. Clean the house, pay the bills, change diapers, and so on. I am not one to go back to sleep in the morning because there is just too much to do. After dinner, it is finally time to wind down. By evening, I am exhausted and sore. I love to relax and wind down in the Jacuzzi. It takes every worry and task and bubbles it away. I go to bed. There is not enough brain power at the end of the day to be a night owl.
Some days I would love to be a night owl. I would love to be able to go out to a movie, or dinner late, with friends, but by the time that night rolls around, my brain no longer functions. My body no longer wants to cooperate. Even though it takes multiple cups of coffee to fully wake up the mind and body, I would say that I am still more a morning person than a night owl, and I think I’ll keep it that way. For now, anyway.
