Thanks To You by Rebecca - July 2016 Scholarship Essay

When I was just beginning my elementary school career, my family split apart. I didn't have any friends, and I struggled with focusing on school while I watched my mom and dad disagree over every little aspect of their lives. While I had to worry about being a social reject, my mom had to worry about keeping the remains of my family sane and my dad had to worry about making my family whole again.

My first-grade teacher was one of the most understanding and supportive people I have ever met. She had a soft, sweet voice and was always kind when I needed it most. Rather than treating me like a reject as everyone else had at that time, she treated me as someone who was simply at a rough patch in life. As I struggled with fitting in, she helped me realize that eventually everything was going to clear up and I'd make friends later on. Without her guidance during that tough year, I would not have turned out the way I did.

My teacher taught me many different lessons, but the one that sticks with me the most is to always look ahead to the future. Despite the fact that you can't see what the future holds, you can always hope that it will be worth the trouble and pain you go through.

Thanks to you, I got through that bad year. My family worked through their troubles and I became one of the top students in my grade. Thanks to you encouraging me to put my past behind and to focus on the future, I'm dedicating my essay to you.
