Highschool Challenges by Rhyen - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
Throughout my high school journey, I have faced several academic challenges, but one that stands out the most is my struggle with math during my sophomore year. Math has always been a subject that I found difficult, but sophomore year was especially tough. My grades started to slip, and I was worried about how it would affect my future plans to study accounting and advertising at North Dakota State University. I knew I had to do something to overcome this challenge, so I took a step back and made a plan.
The first thing I did was reach out for help. I talked to my math teacher after class and explained my situation. She was really understanding and offered to help me during lunch breaks and after school. This was the first time I realized the importance of asking for help and how teachers can be such great resources when you are struggling. With her guidance, I was able to tackle some of the concepts that had been giving me trouble.
In addition to seeking help from my teacher, I also started forming study groups with my classmates. This was a game changer for me. Working with others allowed me to see different perspectives and approaches to solving problems. It was also encouraging to know that I was not the only one facing difficulties. We helped each other out, and it made learning more enjoyable and less stressful. The support from my peers was invaluable, and it taught me the power of collaboration.
I also realized that I needed to change my study habits. I was not putting in enough time outside of class to really understand the material. I began dedicating specific hours each week to focus solely on math. I used online resources and practice problems to improve my skills. This consistent practice helped me build confidence and gradually improve my grades. It was not easy at first, but I learned that perseverance is key when facing academic challenges.
Another important lesson I learned was the importance of having a positive mindset. There were times when I felt like giving up, but I reminded myself of my goals and why I wanted to succeed. I wanted to pursue a career in accounting and advertising, and I knew that overcoming this challenge was a step towards achieving that dream. I started to view my struggle with math as an opportunity to grow and learn, rather than just a hurdle.
As the year progressed, my hard work started to pay off. My grades improved, and I began to feel more confident in my abilities. By the end of the year, I had not only passed my math class but also gained a deeper understanding of the subject. This experience taught me that with determination, support, and a willingness to adapt, I can overcome academic challenges.
Looking back, I am grateful for the struggle because it prepared me for future challenges. It taught me the value of asking for help, working with others, and staying committed to my goals. These are lessons that I will carry with me as I move forward in my academic journey at North Dakota State University. I know that college will bring its own set of challenges, but I am confident that I have the tools and mindset to face them head-on.
In conclusion, my struggle with math in high school was a challenging academic experience that taught me valuable lessons. By seeking help, collaborating with peers, changing my study habits, and maintaining a positive mindset, I was able to overcome this challenge. This experience has prepared me for the future and has strengthened my resolve to pursue my passions in accounting and advertising. I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead and am determined to make the most of my time at NDSU.
