Make me dream come true by Ria - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
My journey as a first-time college student at Liberty University has been an eye-opening experience, especially as I navigate the world of accounting. As someone who is passionate about numbers and financial systems, I was excited to dive into my major. However, my transition from high school to college was not as smooth as I anticipated, and I faced a challenging academic experience that tested my resilience and determination.
During my first semester, I enrolled in an introductory accounting course that was essential for my major. I was eager to learn and excel, but I quickly realized that the pace and depth of college-level coursework were significantly more demanding than what I was used to. The concepts were complex, and the workload was intense. I found myself struggling to keep up with the material, and my grades were not reflecting the effort I was putting in. It was disheartening and, at times, overwhelming.
The biggest challenge was understanding the fundamental principles of accounting. The lectures moved quickly, and I often left class feeling confused and unsure of how to apply what I had learned. My first few quizzes and assignments did not go as well as I had hoped, and I began to doubt my abilities. As an Asian woman, I felt a cultural pressure to excel academically, which added to my stress. I knew I needed to find a way to overcome these obstacles if I wanted to succeed in my chosen field.
I realized that I needed to take control of my learning and seek out resources that could help me better understand the material. I started by reaching out to my professor during office hours. Initially, I was hesitant to ask for help, fearing it might make me seem inadequate. However, my professor was incredibly supportive and provided me with additional resources and explanations that clarified many of the concepts I was struggling with. This experience taught me the importance of seeking help and utilizing the resources available to me.
In addition to seeking help from my professor, I also joined a study group with fellow classmates. This was a turning point for me, as it allowed me to collaborate with others who were facing similar challenges. We would meet regularly to discuss the material, work through problems together, and share study tips. This collaborative environment not only helped me grasp the concepts more effectively but also boosted my confidence. I learned that I was not alone in my struggles and that working with others could enhance my understanding.
To further reinforce my learning, I dedicated additional time to reviewing the course material outside of class. I created a study schedule that allowed me to break down the content into manageable sections, focusing on one topic at a time. I utilized online resources, such as tutorials and practice exercises, to supplement my understanding. This disciplined approach helped me gradually improve my comprehension and performance in the course.
Another significant factor in overcoming this academic challenge was developing effective time management skills. Balancing coursework, study sessions, and personal commitments was difficult at first, but I learned to prioritize tasks and set realistic goals. I used a planner to organize my schedule, which helped me stay on track and reduce the feeling of being overwhelmed. By managing my time effectively, I was able to allocate sufficient time for studying while also maintaining a healthy balance between academics and personal life.
As the semester progressed, I began to see improvements in my grades and overall understanding of accounting principles. The hard work and dedication paid off, and by the end of the course, I had not only passed but excelled in the final exam. This experience taught me valuable lessons about perseverance, the importance of seeking help, and the power of collaboration.
Reflecting on this challenging academic experience, I am grateful for the growth it inspired in me. It reinforced my passion for accounting and strengthened my resolve to succeed in my studies. I am now more confident in my ability to tackle difficult subjects and am better equipped to handle future challenges. This experience has also reminded me of the importance of humility and the willingness to learn from others.
In conclusion, overcoming this academic challenge was a pivotal moment in my college journey. It taught me that success is not just about intelligence or talent, but also about hard work, determination, and the willingness to seek support when needed. I am proud of how far I have come and am excited to continue my studies in accounting, knowing that I have the tools and mindset to overcome any obstacles that come my way.
