Gratitude is Courteous and Prudential by Riley - March 2019 Scholarship Essay

As you go through these next four years—and the rest of your life—never forget the impact of your gratitude. Teachers are arguably the most underpaid professionals, and it is obvious that they do not teach for the profit. So, thank them for their time, efforts, and knowledge. Imagine what your life would be like if you never learned about math, science, art, history, sports, or anything you are passionate about. Knowledge helps give life meaning, and teachers are investing into your future by sharing their knowledge with you, so please never disregard the important role they play in your life.

By thanking your teachers, you not only exercise good manners but also create a connection between you and them. Not many students thank their teachers, so looking at them and saying “thank you” at the end of each class period provides you with an opportunity to distinguish yourself. Chances are, if you make the extra effort to thank them, they will be more likely to start a conversation with you, which will give them the opportunity to know you better. This connection can be beneficial to you in the future if you need letters of recommendation for jobs, colleges, and scholarships.

You may not like every teacher you have, but please do not become indifferent to the service they are providing you. You will still leave that class being more knowledgeable than you were before, which is an immense privilege. So, please, no matter what, never forget to thank the people who devote their lives to your academic advancement.
