Roree's Story by Roree - December 2016 Scholarship Essay

I never dreamed that I would be 16 years old enrolling as a freshman in college. I have always known that I want to be an obstetrician gynecologist. I can still remember when my mom announced that I would be a big sister. I watched her grow and I was amazed at the wonder of what a woman’s body was capable of. I was meant to help others in the areas of pregnancy, childbirth, and women’s health. This is what drives me everyday when I commute to my campus and I feel this sense of excitement with a small drop of overwhelming anxiety.
I have so many educational goals. It is my goal to receive a 4.0 GPA. I will get there by meeting my daily goals. Those daily goals include showing up each day without fail and completing quality work while helping my fellow student peers. I will meet my goal one assignment at a time. It takes a lot of discipline and sacrifice. I cannot do many of the things that friends my age get to do. I have already forgone prom and even a high school graduation. Many of my friends are just entering their junior year in high school. They are beginning to put their college plans into action. They are taking their ACT’s and SAT’s. They are getting their drivers licenses. I have my learning permit but I just don't have a lot of time to practice driving. I have a video blog that discusses what goes on in my life and I am very proud of it. It helps me to encourage others whose lives are similar. It is so an important to inspire other people to follow their dreams.
My plans after graduation include me applying to medical school. I am not quite sure which medical school that I will choose, but I am very interested in Howard University and Washington University. After medical school I must go on to complete a four-residency in obstetrics and gynecology. I have to also pass written and hands-on tests to meet state licensing requirements. After I meet this scholastic goals, my ultimate goal is to help women. I would like to give light to other issues that women face such as menopause, breast cancer, and cervical cancer. I would like to educate women about their bodies and help them with certain issues such as birth control. I would like to also empower women to be more educated about their bodies with regard to disease and pregnancy. I am so excited about teaching expectant mothers all about their fetuses before they ever meet them. This will help them to make better lifestyle choices for a healthier outcome. I also have a vision that I will be educating women about being healthy prior to conception. I have a passion for women’s health and patient care and I can see myself in living color as an obstetrician gynecologist.
I deserve to win this scholarship because of the obstacles that I have overcome to get to where I am now. School was not easy for me as a young adolescent. I struggled a great deal socially and academically. I came to a point that I was uncertain of what my future would be. I questioned whether I was even good enough to realize my career goals. After speaking with my parents, we came to a decision to take me out of my traditional school setting. I enrolled in a private online college that put me in the position to be my own best advocate for my education. I managed my learning and my schedule and I turned my high school experience around. This was the best decision for me because I was able to bring my GPA from a 2.0 to a 3.7. I found that the traditional high school setting was not best for me. I feel strongly that there are a lot of students who are just like me. They feel socially awkward at times and they get overwhelmed. I would like to be a shining example that it is okay to think outside of the box. What I was going through did not make me any less than a good student. The traditional high school setting is not a one-size fit all. Sometimes a student must work in a setting that fits their own personal learning needs. I was able to increase my GPA and I graduated from high school two years earlier than my peers. This experience has shown me that I can accomplish anything in my life that I set my mind to. I am completing my first semester as a freshman in college with exceptional grades. I am involved in student activities and I am growing to be what I was created to be. I have come to know that the possibilities are endless. I am excited about not only being successful but mostly giving back to others who face difficulties in life. There were many times that I thought to myself that I was not smart enough be a doctor. I now know that not only am I smart enough, but that I am resourceful enough to think outside of the box and find the answer for me, even when it is not apparent.
