“Overcoming Academic Challenges: My Journey Through Financial Accounting” by Rosetta - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
As a sophomore at the University of Phoenix, majoring in Business Administration, I have faced my share of academic challenges. One of the most significant challenges I encountered was during my freshman year, in a course called Financial Accounting. This class was a core requirement for my major, and I knew from the start that it would be demanding. However, I did not anticipate just how much it would test my abilities and my resolve.
The challenge began with the complexity of the material. Financial Accounting is a subject that requires not only memorization but also a deep understanding of concepts and the ability to apply them in various scenarios. The coursework involved a lot of numbers, formulas, and principles that seemed foreign to me at first. I found myself struggling to keep up with the pace of the lectures and the volume of information that I needed to absorb.
As the semester progressed, I realized that my usual study habits were not sufficient. I had always been a diligent student, but this class required more than just hard work; it required strategic effort and a new approach to learning. My initial grades on quizzes and assignments were not what I had hoped for, and I felt the weight of the challenge pressing down on me.
Determined not to let this setback define my academic journey, I decided to take a proactive approach to overcome this obstacle. The first step I took was to seek help. I reached out to my professor during office hours and explained my struggles. This was not easy for me, as I have always been somewhat shy about asking for help. However, my professor was understanding and offered valuable advice on how to tackle the material more effectively. He suggested breaking down complex topics into smaller, more manageable parts and focusing on understanding the logic behind each concept rather than just memorizing facts.
In addition to seeking help from my professor, I formed a study group with a few classmates who were also finding the course challenging. We met regularly to discuss the material, work through practice problems, and support each other. This collaborative environment allowed me to gain different perspectives on the topics we were learning and helped me to see where I might have been misunderstanding certain concepts.
I also made use of the university’s tutoring services, where I worked with a tutor who specialized in accounting. These sessions were incredibly beneficial, as the tutor was able to explain the material in a way that resonated with me. She provided additional resources, such as practice exams and study guides, which helped reinforce my understanding.
Another strategy I adopted was to create a detailed study schedule. I allocated specific times each day to focus solely on Financial Accounting, ensuring that I was consistently reviewing the material and not cramming before exams. This routine helped me to retain information more effectively and reduced the stress I felt as exam dates approached.
Through these efforts, I gradually began to see improvements in my understanding of the course material and my performance on assessments. By the end of the semester, I had not only passed the class but had earned a grade that I was proud of. This experience taught me the importance of perseverance, adaptability, and the willingness to seek help when needed.
Overcoming the challenge of Financial Accounting has had a lasting impact on my academic journey. It has strengthened my problem-solving skills and boosted my confidence in tackling difficult subjects. I have learned that challenges are opportunities for growth, and with the right mindset and resources, they can be overcome.
This experience has also reinforced my passion for my major, as I now have a deeper appreciation for the intricacies of business administration. I am more motivated than ever to continue my studies and to apply what I have learned to real-world situations in the future.
In conclusion, facing and overcoming the challenge of Financial Accounting was a pivotal moment in my college career. It taught me valuable lessons about resilience, collaboration, and the importance of seeking support. I am grateful for the experience, as it has prepared me to face future academic and professional challenges with confidence and determination.
