More Than A Mentor by Roy - January 2025 Scholarship Essay

Being a senior in high school now, I have experienced a lot in my 13 years of school. I have been taught lessons, fought through adversity, and grown overall as a person. However, I have not gotten this far on my own. I have a variety of teachers and mentors who have helped me on my high school journey.

Although I have been impacted by several teachers, one sticks out above all. Mr. Abbey, a math teacher at our school, has not only bettered me as a student, and an athlete but also as a person. He has been a dedicated member of Allen East’s community for decades, as a teacher, but more importantly, a coach. I was privileged enough to be an athlete under him as a jr high football player and a high school wrestler. On both teams, he taught me important lessons about hard work, dedication, resilience, and family. He taught me that I needed to fight for my family, no matter how hard things get.
As for education, he was an incredible teacher for me. Not only did he make math easier than ever, but he also taught me to push myself farther than I thought I could go. He believed in me, and he made that very clear from the start. He was a great motivator, but was honest with me when I needed improvement.

So, overall, he was a massive positive influence to not only my education but also my overall life. He is someone I will always credit for my success, and I hope he can impact others in the same sort of way that he was been able to impact me.
