A Diversity of Achievements by Ryan - December 2016 Scholarship Essay
I have had many great accomplishes within my the past four years of my high school career. None as great, as what I have accomplished for the people of the latino race within my community. Growing up in a prominent white community, I was often considered different because of my cultural background. In other words, my latino race was not well represented in my community. Consequently, leadership statuses were mainly held by only those of the caucasian race. Hence, there was no diversity. I made a promise to myself, my family, and to the latino culture that I would become a trailblazing leader within my community.
To bring my motivation to action, I decided that I would try and get involved in as many activities as possible, I wanted to bring in diversity and a new viewpoint into the clubs and organizations within my school. I worked my way up to becoming a three sport captain, the president of two clubs, a national honors student, and many more leadership roles. I bring a new look, and a new voice to my community. People appreciate the ideas I bring to the table, and view me as a role model. I was able to achieve success as a young latino in the primarily caucasian state of Nebraska. With hard work and determination, I became a success story and changed the way latinos were viewed in my school and community.
My accomplishments were brought into light this fall when the University of Nebraska awarded me the Nebraska Leadership & Achievement award and invited me to the Nebraska Diversity Leadership Symposia. When my cousin saw me standing up on the stage receiving my award, he was awestruck. He told me he wanted to follow in my footsteps, and receive the same reward when he was in high school. This moment was the proudest I have ever been in my whole life.
