High School Thoughts by Ryan - March 2019 Scholarship Essay
High School. Where dreams can come true and the possibilities are endless, if you try! High school can be one of the best or worst experiences we can have as young adults. I remember taking a tour of my high school for the first time. All I remember is how much bigger the building was compared to the rest of my schools. I was terrified to start a new school and meet new people. I want to give you a few tips I learned from my high school career in order to make you a more successful high school student.
The first bit of advice I would give is to not let those scary thoughts about a new school get in your head too much. It is completely natural to have those thoughts as you enter a new chapter of your life. As soon as the first week of school passes, those tense emotions should start to subside and it will start to feel like you belong. It is important not to get caught up in the change so much that it effects the type of person you become or act like at school. Ninety-nine percent of the time, there are multiple other students feeling the same way and talking with them about how you’re feeling will be beneficial for both of you. Embracing change is something that can be difficult at first. I believe that it is important to get out of your comfort zone and try new things, even if that makes your nervous. If you are always content with where you are then you probably are reaching your fullest potential and that would be unfortunate. Most highly successful people did not get to be that way by staying put with where they are. They are the people who are always pushing themselves to reach greater heights and exploring new possibilities.
Most importantly, push yourself. Push yourself to the brink of exhaustion to where you are always trying new things and learning about yourself. One of my favorite quotes is by Les Brown. He says, “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.” As long as you keep pushing and challenging yourself, the worst that can happen id that you learn something about yourself that you didn’t know before. You can never hurt yourself by giving something your all. I wish someone had given me this piece of advice before I started high school because I know it would have helped me reach greater heights. I wish you nothing but the best in your journey through high school!
