The Unexpected by Samantha - December 2016 Scholarship Essay
I don’t think that an award or academic honor has to constitute a school accomplishment. For me, the school accomplishment that made me most proud wasn’t an honor roll, perfect attendance, or volunteer award; it was simply finding what I was passionate about. Finding and learning more about yourself is in my opinion, one of the biggest accomplishments that can be achieved in one’s lifetime and it came to me in school.
In my senior year of high school, I took a class called iQuest where we were able to find and pursue our passions by gaining internships and gaining “soft” skills that would aid us in the future such as learning how to write resumes, cover letters, and elevator pitches. Through this course I was able to figure out what makes me tick, what makes me happy, what I want to do for the rest of my life. This is something so special and something that I take pride in because I believe that most people don’t even get to learn what this is until they are in college or beyond; in fact some people never discover it.
I’ve learned that my mission in life is to be an inspiration to others and to make a difference in the lives of the people around me regardless of it being big or small. I desire to travel around the world to learn new cultures and live in other people’s shoes; understand their perspective. I hope to continue discovering happiness through the smiles of the individuals that I interact with.
I want to combine my passions of helping others with my other passion of the medical field. My goal is to apply to a medical humanitarian aid organization such as Doctors Without Borders or MedLife and travel around the world to aid less fortunate countries via the medical field. In joining such an organization, I believe that I will reach my true definition of success. I want to feel like everything I do has a purpose and that I’m impacting society in a positive way.
Knowing what you want to do with your life and being excited, passionate, and happy about it is so paramount and that has been my true school accomplishment.
