My Motivation by Samantha - February 2023 Scholarship Essay
Several soft skills are vital when considering a successful education. I believe that staying motivated is one of the most important skills because it helps you stay focused and not give up during difficult times. I like to break motivation into the past, present and future.
When thinking about past experiences that feed into your motivation, think of all you have done to get where you are. I like to think of all the years and classes that I have struggled through in order to be at the level I am. I remember the fun experiences that I missed out on because of school assignments or all-nighter study sessions. Not to mention the thousands of dollars that I've spent on supplies and classes. I know I am not the only one who would hate all that effort to be wasted on giving up now. All the sacrifices I've made keep me motivated on my hardest days which gives me the boost to go an extra mile, even when I think I can't.
What motivates me in the present are those who are watching my progress and depending on my success. I strive to be a good role model for my little sister as well as making my parents proud. Out of my parents and 4 siblings, I was the first one to graduate high school and the only one who has continued to college. I don't want to stop there. I want my little sister to see that hard work pays off in hopes that she follows the same footsteps in furthering her education. Another goal of mine is to provide for my parents who are getting older. They are my biggest motivation I have and that makes trying my best school a lot easier.
Lastly, what motivates me in the future is the doors that will open based on my education and career. My goal is to get my bachelor's in nursing which will allow me to work in many different patient settings. I hope to be able to help populations that are less fortunate or have language barriers understand how to care for their health. My parents are both from Mexico and have struggled with their health because of a lack of knowledge. The thought of being able to educate others in need is exciting and a great motivation!
Without the motivation to do well in school or to keep pushing, it would be easier to give up. A successful education is time consuming and not easy. We have to remember our sacrifices, who is watching us and where we want to be to enhance our motivation when it is lacking. With it, giving up is not easy.
