Academic Hardship by Samantha - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
In Thanksgiving of 2022, my mother suffered a major stroke on Thanksgiving while we were cooking dinner together. My family and I rushed her to the hospital where she spend several days. The whole time she was in there, I stayed. I couldn't just leave her alone, she was my mother. She was the reason I was born, she never left me during the hard times, why would it be right for me to leave her? I stayed in the hospital room with her, not once leaving. I logged onto my virtual school every morning just like normal, tried to complete my assignments like normal but it was rough, especially since the strokes temporarily paralyzed one of her arms and one of her legs. After the hospital stay, she struggled to walk and do things herself so I waited on her hand and foot while doing school work. I was there when she went back into the hospital just a few short weeks afterwards as well as this June. All through the times I was helping my mother try to navigate through life post strokes, I was turning in assignments, still trying my best. I pushed through all the barriers of me completing school because I knew I needed it. I knew it was a necessity, especially if I wanted to go to college and study psychology. I knew it had to be done and I made it work for myself and my mom.
