The Ideal Environment by Samuel - October 2014 Scholarship Essay
Through research, today's educators understand that students learn in a variety of different ways. Therefor we arm our instructors with the latest technologies and students now come to class with smart phones, tablets and computing power that was not even imaginable ten years ago. Traditional text books are supplemented with technology, or are simply interactive e-readers with thousands of study questions. In today's technological advanced society, some classes are even taught online, without interaction with an instructor in order to accommodate the "busy" student's schedule.
However through the use of all this technology, are we truly teaching our post-secondary students how to think out-side the box, or are they learning to simply memorize and reverberated facts? By eliminated human interaction with online learning, are we providing a disservice to today's youth by not truly preparing them for the engaged, fast and dynamic workforce of today?
The ideal classroom environment should still include dedicated, informed and engaged professors. Professors who ignite passion and imagination within their students. Those who utilize all the tools available today, to teach and inspire the future generation of their craft. They should not be replaced, disengaged or rely solely on technology to teach their students, rather use it to enhance their abilities to train our future generation to think, to question and to innovate in order to compete in what is simply the most competitive and global society of today. William Butler Yeats states: ‘Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire’; and in our world today, that still rings true.
