My Goals in College + How My Parents Have Helped Prepare Me to Achieve These Goals by Samuel - February 2020 Scholarship Essay

There are a number of goals that I will achieve if I were to attend Saginaw Valley State University. Speaking in terms of academics, I plan to be a part of SVSU’s honor college and consistently be a top student at this school. I will continue to create study habits for myself, use the resources provided for me, and receive tutoring when necessary to make sure that this happens. I really want to learn new things and I want to complete college as someone who is ready to face the challenges of graduate school, and of life, and I truly believe that this is the place to do it. I also would enjoy being a part of the student government in any way that I can so I can experience new things and meet new people. I feel as though I could accomplish great things as a representative of the student body and it is something I would pursue, if I were to attend this university. I am also considering being a member of the marching band. It was one of the most enjoyable parts of my high school experience, and I absolutely love playing the baritone saxophone, as it is a fantastic way to relieve stress and have fun. To continue, as a student at this school, I would just revel in the prospect of meeting new people on a consistent basis. It would be an amazing feeling to move away from home and come to a place full of amazing people who are looking to do the same as I am and create lifelong bonds with new friends. I have already met someone who is also a Pre-Physician Assistant and it has not even been one hour since I have arrived! I can not begin to imagine the possibilities a whole year here would have for me. SVSU is already starting to feel like a home with a strong community and many friendly faces.

My parents have been two of the biggest motivators in my life ever since I started my first day of school. They have always been consistent in teaching me that hard work will pay off and that frustration will come, but that I must learn how to persevere and move on from my hardships. They show me this through their own examples. If there is work to be done, they do it. They work from home, they work at night, they work when they are sick, and my mother was even working on the way up here! They have shown me how to be ambitious and how to accomplish my goals, and they have done a fantastic job of doing so. Time and time again they teach me and nurture me and help me to grow and now it is to the point where I am ready and able to grow on my own. I will use what I have learned in school, whether it is using old study habits, or creating new ones, and what I have learned from my very wise and hard-working parents to achieve all of the goals that I have set for myself, academically and socially, and I will not fail.

If I were to receive the President’s Scholarship, this university would not be disappointed. I know what it means to work hard for your goals to be accomplished and what must happen in order for your dreams and aspirations to become reality, and I am more than ready to face whatever challenges come my way and be the best student I can possibly be.
