Challenging academic experience and how I overcame it. by Santiago - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
One of the most challenging academic experiences I faced was my transition to a new country, where I had to adapt to a completely different educational system while learning a new language. When my family emigrated, we left behind everything we knew, including the support networks that had been an important part of my education. Suddenly, I was in an environment where not only were the academic expectations higher, but also the language barrier hindered my ability to communicate and participate in class.
I remember on my first day of school abroad feeling overwhelmed as I listened to my classmates and teachers speak rapidly in a language I barely understood. This not only affected my academic performance, but also my confidence. I felt I was at a constant disadvantage, especially in subjects such as literature and history, where an advanced level of comprehension and written expression was required.
To overcome this challenge, I decided to tackle the problem with discipline and determination. I started taking additional language classes after school, watching educational videos and reading basic books in English to improve my vocabulary and grammar. In addition, I took a practical approach: I carried a dictionary with me at all times and took detailed notes in class, even if I did not fully understand the content at the time.
I also sought help from my classmates and teachers. Although at first it was difficult to ask for help because of my insecurity, I found that most people were willing to support me. Gradually, as my language skills improved, I began to participate more in class, ask questions and contribute to discussions.
This process was not easy and took months of constant effort, but the results were rewarding. Not only did I manage to improve my grades in the most challenging subjects, but I also gained renewed confidence in my academic abilities. I learned the importance of resilience, hard work and the ability to ask for help when needed.
Today, I look back on this experience as one of the most formative of my life. Not only did it help me adapt to a demanding academic environment, but it also taught me that with enough effort and a positive mindset, it is possible to overcome any obstacle. This challenge strengthened my character and prepared me for future situations, both academically and in my personal life. I am grateful for the lessons learned and how they have shaped my perspective towards challenges.
