my story by saphina - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

My name is Saphina Stanley, and I am a high school senior with a passion for learning and a dream of attending the University of North Texas at Dallas. I am writing to share a challenging academic experience that has shaped my journey and taught me valuable lessons about perseverance and growth.

Throughout high school, I have always been a dedicated student, striving to maintain a solid GPA of 3. However, my junior year presented a challenge that put my resilience to the test. It was during this year that I enrolled in an Advanced Placement (AP) Chemistry class, excited to dive deeper into the world of science. Little did I know that this class would be one of the most demanding experiences of my academic career.

From the beginning, AP Chemistry was a whirlwind of complex concepts and rigorous coursework. I found myself struggling to keep up with the pace of the class, often feeling overwhelmed by the intricate details of chemical reactions and equations. Despite my best efforts, my grades were not reflecting the hard work I was putting in, and this was disheartening.

The turning point came when I received a particularly low score on a major exam. It was a wake-up call that I needed to change my approach if I wanted to succeed. I realized that I could not tackle this challenge alone, and it was okay to seek help. This realization marked the beginning of my journey to overcome this academic hurdle.

The first step I took was to reach out to my teacher for guidance. I scheduled a meeting with her to discuss my struggles and ask for advice on how to improve. She was incredibly supportive and provided me with additional resources to help me grasp the concepts better. She also encouraged me to form a study group with my classmates, which turned out to be a game-changer.

Working with my peers allowed me to see different perspectives and approaches to solving problems. We would meet regularly to review material, discuss difficult topics, and quiz each other. This collaborative environment not only helped me understand the content more thoroughly but also boosted my confidence.

In addition to group study sessions, I took advantage of online resources such as educational videos and practice quizzes. These tools allowed me to learn at my own pace and revisit topics until I felt comfortable with them. I also developed a habit of setting aside specific times each day for chemistry study, which helped me manage my time more effectively and reduce stress.

As the semester progressed, I began to see improvements in my understanding and performance. My grades slowly started to rise, and I felt a renewed sense of motivation. The experience taught me that persistence and a willingness to adapt are key to overcoming challenges.

Through this journey, I learned the importance of seeking help and collaborating with others. I realized that asking for assistance is not a sign of weakness but a step towards growth. This experience also reinforced my belief in the power of hard work and determination.

My struggle with AP Chemistry was a pivotal moment in my high school career. It taught me valuable skills that I will carry with me as I transition to college. I am now more prepared to face the challenges that lie ahead, and I am excited to continue my education at the University of North Texas at Dallas.

In summary, overcoming the challenges of AP Chemistry was not easy, but it was a rewarding experience that taught me resilience, collaboration, and the importance of seeking help. I am grateful for the support of my teacher and classmates, who played a crucial role in my success. This experience has strengthened my resolve to pursue my academic goals and has prepared me for the next chapter of my educational journey.
