What does my senior quote mean to me? by Savannah - November 2018 Scholarship Essay

"The greatest pleasure in life is doing what people say you cannot do." -Walter Bagehot. In my lifetime teachers, neighbors, and friends have told me that I couldn't do certain things, but I always proved them wrong by working hard and succeeding. The list of things that “I could not do” ranges from basic common core school work and even my dad deploying to another country serving in the military. However, regardless of the negative things that were said to me, I believe that nothing is impossible if you put your mind to it.
First, my second-grade teacher said that I would never be able to comprehend what I read, but because of that single comment my love for reading has blossomed beyond measure. One can always catch me with a book in my hand and ask me what it is about; I tell them every detail. I excel when interpreting essays and book reports as if I wrote them myself.
In the fourth-grade, when a tutor was helping me with my math, he said that he was smarter than me and that I am “too stupid” to teach math to. Yet, my dad helped me to get the A’s and B’s that I currently have! I constantly struggle, but I don’t stop by simply giving up, I stop when I have the right answer to the problem.
In the fifth-grade, my teacher said to never bother going to college, so I here I am senior year, with a 3.5 GPA, about to graduate high school and about to accomplish my dream of going to college.
Second, last year my dad deployed for nearly a year, and my family I knew that it would be very difficult for us; without family nearby to support us. All the men in the neighborhood said “women cannot fix a house, let alone run it by themselves”, implying that we were doomed to struggle. Murphy’s law says “whatever can go wrong will go wrong”. This proved to be true for my mother and I. However, we also proved that we can and will fix whatever is broken through hard work, and never giving up! Whether it’s the sink, a lawn mower, a bone, or even grades; I took and still do take pleasure in accomplishing things that people have said that I cannot do!
