How Computers Changed MY World by Savannah - January 2020 Scholarship Essay
Technology has drastically evolved over time, but especially since I was an elementary student in the late 2000s. We now have phones that have light-up keyboards instead of actual keys, as well as computers that double as large tablets. Even though these are all renovations that have occurred in the last two decades, not every renovation makes it into a classroom. However, I would say that for the pieces of technology that have made it into the classroom, they have made a huge difference in my life as a student and as a person.
The biggest thing that has influenced my life in the classroom is the ability to use a computer to type. Throughout every school day, I am expected to complete multiple different assignments, most of which are now solely available on the computer. I believe that the ability to utilize a computer has positively impacted my ability to write and complete work in class. For starters, I would not have been able to complete as many assignments as fast as expected had I needed to handwrite all of the assignments on paper. Not only does handwriting cause students to typically take longer to complete an assignment, but you can only write for so long before your hands start to ache and you have to take a break, which can cause you to take even longer to complete an assignment. Plus, some words can get “lost in translation” when handwriting because some people, myself included, do not have the most elegant handwriting and it can be hard for others to read what is being written. Overall, typing allows for there to be an overarching similarity between all pieces of writing so that ideas can be read easier without a break in the flow while trying to figure out if the word written is “gnats” or “brats”.
Although typing has positively influenced my classroom experience, the ability to use a computer to write has also influenced my passions outside of the classroom. Due to all of the positives previously stated, I have been able to pursue my passion for writing by typing on a computer. I have always known that I love to write and tell stories, but handwriting stories can be difficult and it doesn’t allow for my pieces to be easily accessible or widely available to an outside audience. This would be detrimental to my writing career because, without other people’s opinions, I wouldn’t know how to further improve my stories. This access to technology has helped to improve me inside and outside of the classroom.
Comprehensively, technology, specifically the ability to use a computer to type, has definitely benefited me throughout my school career. Not only have I had a more positive experience in the classroom because of the access to typing, but I have been able to further hone my writing abilities with the computer. Without this access to technology, I would not have been able to write as much as I have been able to, and I would not have enjoyed writing as much as I do now. Not only has my classroom experience improved, such as while writing essays, but I have had the opportunity to further my writing passion outside of school. Without technology, I would not be this dedicated to writing nor would I have had the chance to improve myself through other people’s edits and suggestions. Thankfully I have been given access to computers through my school and family which has allowed me to stay in touch with my writing side while also having the ability to complete schoolwork efficiently. Technology has greatly improved my life and I do not know where I would be without it.
