Challenges in Life by Sebastian - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

As I prepare to begin my journey as a freshman at Wake Forest University, I reflect on the challenging academic experiences that have shaped my path. One particular challenge stands out to me, not only because it was difficult at the time, but because it taught me so much about perseverance and adaptability.

During my junior year of high school, I faced one of my toughest academic challenges in chemistry class. Science has always been a passion of mine, which is why I chose to major in Biology and Kinesiology/Physical Therapy. However, chemistry was not coming to me as easily as I had hoped. The concepts were complex, and I struggled to grasp them fully. My grades in chemistry were not reflecting the effort I was putting in, and I felt frustrated and discouraged.

The first step I took to overcome this challenge was to change my mindset. I realized that I needed to approach chemistry differently than my other subjects. Instead of seeing my struggles as failures, I began to view them as opportunities to learn and grow. This shift in perspective was crucial because it helped me stay motivated and resilient.

I also understood that I could not overcome this challenge alone. I reached out to my chemistry teacher for help. I was nervous at first because I thought it might make me look less capable, but my teacher was incredibly supportive. She helped me identify the specific areas where I was struggling and provided additional resources to help me improve. Her encouragement made a huge difference, and I started to feel more confident in my abilities.

In addition to seeking help from my teacher, I formed a study group with some classmates. We met regularly to review material, work on practice problems, and support each other. This collaborative approach made learning more enjoyable and less overwhelming. It was reassuring to know that I was not the only one facing difficulties, and together we were able to tackle the challenges more effectively.

I also dedicated extra time outside of class to study and practice. I created a study schedule that allowed me to focus on chemistry without neglecting my other subjects. This required discipline and time management, but it was necessary to improve my understanding of the material. I used online resources, watched tutorial videos, and completed additional practice exercises to reinforce what I was learning in class.

Over time, my hard work started to pay off. I began to see improvements in my test scores and felt more comfortable with the material. This experience taught me the importance of persistence and the value of seeking help when needed. It also reinforced my passion for science, as overcoming this challenge made me even more determined to pursue my studies in Biology and Kinesiology/Physical Therapy.

This challenging academic experience was a turning point for me. It taught me that setbacks are not the end, but rather a part of the journey. I learned that with the right mindset, support, and dedication, I could overcome obstacles and achieve my goals. This lesson will undoubtedly serve me well as I embark on my college journey and face new challenges.

As a Hispanic student, I also recognize the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity. My cultural background has instilled in me a strong sense of resilience and determination. I am proud of my heritage and the values it has taught me, and I carry these lessons with me as I pursue my academic and career aspirations.

In conclusion, the challenge I faced in chemistry was a defining moment in my academic journey. It taught me valuable lessons about persistence, seeking help, and embracing challenges as opportunities for growth. As I look forward to my studies at Wake Forest University, I am confident that these lessons will guide me as I pursue my passion for science and work towards a career in physical therapy. I am grateful for the experiences that have shaped me, and I am excited for the opportunities that lie ahead.
