Black Excellence by Semeret - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

My name is Semeret Williams, and I am a freshman at Clark Atlanta University, majoring in Business Administration. As a Black woman and an African immigrant adopted by a white family, I have faced unique challenges that have shaped who I am today.

Growing up, I often felt caught between two worlds. My family loved me deeply and provided a supportive home, but navigating cultural differences was not always easy. At times, I struggled with feeling different from my peers, both at home and in school. It was hard to explain to others why my family looked different from me and to answer questions about my background that I was still trying to understand myself.

One of the biggest challenges was finding my identity. Being raised in a predominantly white environment, I often felt disconnected from my African roots and the Black community. I longed to learn more about my heritage and embrace the culture that was part of me. Over time, I realized that my unique background was not a limitation but a strength. It gave me a broader perspective and a deeper understanding of diversity.

In high school, I worked hard to connect with others who shared similar experiences. I joined clubs and participated in events that celebrated cultural diversity, which helped me feel more grounded in my identity. These experiences taught me the importance of inclusivity and empathy, values I carry with me into my studies and future career in business.

Despite the challenges, my journey has made me resilient and adaptable. I have learned to navigate different cultural spaces with ease, a skill that is invaluable in our global society. I am passionate about using my education to create opportunities for others, especially those who feel marginalized or misunderstood.

Winning this scholarship would help me continue my education and pursue my dream of making a positive impact in the business world. I am committed to using my experiences to foster understanding and bridge cultural gaps, helping others feel seen and heard, just as I have learned to do.

Thank you for considering my application.
