Superhero Strength by Shabohn - April 2019 Scholarship Essay
“I love sleeping because dreams create reality”- Shabohn Osei Tutu. To this day Shabohn Osei Tutu continues to conquer the mountains placed to build a productive and empathetic character. Being diagnosed with sickle cell, having a hardworking and mostly absent father and a severe cancer (stage 4 breast) fighting mother as well as middle child syndrome has been the least of her worries. She often, like most, wished to find her true purpose, and with much trial and error God reviled it to her in the fall of two thousand eighteen, shortly before her twenty-first birthday. The only goal being to become a superhero.
Sure, the superheroes known in common times wear mask and kick butt, but this one would be divergent. Firstly, the name, detrimental to any superhero career, was given and she was to be called The Gift. Surely assumptions would be made, “Oh she must think of herself highly” and she did as most should, however she was not the gift to humanity but was put in place to give, making her the giver (the gift just sounds cooler). Next her battle suit, from the age of ten Shabohn was often found creating whether it be her next mug (through ceramics) or a soft rock hit (through guitar) she was determined to refine the productivity of her auditory circuitry (in the brain), which in turn would aid in her innovative abilities. Now because this superhero was out of the ordinary, she chose to shy from business formal attire and hurry towards a casual and clean style aiding in her “relatable” approach, all while commonly finding herself involved in skateboarding and herbal remedy books in-between sushi and mango breaks. These activities without knowing built her to become the power house she is today. Ceramics emphasized on the ability to make one’s life their own, followed by the guitar introducing the concept of patience and perseverance. Skateboarding implemented that falling did not mean failure and lastly holistic health representing that whatever (attitude, work ethic, etc.) one inputs an equal output will arise. With her natural sympathetic and empathetic heart, she was now prepared to become a superhero.
One might think that twenty-one is too young to save the world, but charity starts at home. For instance in the spring of two-thousand fourteen Shabohn began a book collection for students in the Osei Tutu school in Kumasi Ghana, opened by her loving grandfather to strengthen the social, economic and educational awareness within and about youth in Western Africa, and delivered them by hand while volunteering in the actual construction of the building as well as reading and babysitting the preschoolers, Giving the teachers a much needed break. She often describes this trip as eye opening; allowing her to experience firsthand a struggle that is more troubling than “how do I look today”. From that day forth she began to give freely never seeking reward or recognition, for she was blessed beyond measure and should be willing to give it all away. Since then Shabohn has spearheaded many projects as Charity Chairperson in her local woman’s church group including but not limited to a backpack and basket giveaway full of life supplies to a local Liberty House (a safe haven for domestic violence victims), a very successful clothes and housing items drive (including baskets) for the local Open Arms charity (a home for runaway children), as well as personal projects from “adopting” a little sister to supporting the troupes oversees in Niger and on other bases. This is only the beginning to the potential she holds. Her main goal is “to touch the four corners of the earth with peace, health and love” those that should be affordable to all.
Now this is the fun part, What is to become of Shabohn. Having completed her associate degree in Psychology (detrimental to observational stature and attitude of others) she plans to earn her bachelor’s degree in international nutrition that will in turn fuel her achievement of an osteopathic degree of medicine with a concentration in holistic health. Because global outreach and traveling remained stuck to Shabohn’s soul; It is obvious that her one of her many business ventures will include an international non-profit organization to provide care, cure, and prevent disease from overcoming the world again as it has in the present day. As told by Aquaman’s mother “A king fights for his nation, a hero fights for everyone.”
