Academic challenges I faced by Shalyne - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

As I reflect on my academic journey at Gardner-Webb University, one challenging experience stands out. It was during my sophomore year, when I was taking an advanced biology course that truly tested my limits. As a biology major, I have always been passionate about understanding the complexities of life, but this course was unlike any other I had encountered. It was not just the intricate material that made it difficult, but also the pace and depth of understanding required.

The course was structured around dense scientific literature, requiring us to engage with primary research articles and synthesize information in a way I had never done before. At first, I felt overwhelmed by the sheer volume of reading and the complexity of the concepts. I remember spending hours trying to decipher the dense language of the articles, feeling like I was barely keeping my head above water.

The first few weeks were particularly tough. I struggled to keep up with the assignments and found myself doubting my abilities. My grades on the initial quizzes were not what I had hoped for, and I began to question if I was cut out for the rigor of a biology major. It was a humbling experience, and I knew I needed to find a way to overcome these challenges if I wanted to succeed in the course.

Recognizing that I could not do it alone, I decided to seek help. I reached out to my professor during office hours to discuss my difficulties. This was a big step for me, as I had always been somewhat hesitant to ask for help, fearing it might be seen as a weakness. However, my professor was incredibly supportive and provided guidance on how to approach the material. She suggested strategies for breaking down complex articles into manageable parts and encouraged me to focus on understanding the main ideas rather than getting lost in the details.

In addition to seeking help from my professor, I also formed a study group with a few classmates. We met regularly to discuss the readings and share insights. This collaborative approach was invaluable, as it allowed us to learn from each other and tackle challenging concepts together. Each member brought their own perspective and strengths, and by working as a team, we were able to deepen our understanding of the material.

Another strategy I employed was improving my time management skills. With the heavy workload, it was crucial to stay organized and prioritize tasks effectively. I started using a planner to schedule my study sessions and set specific goals for each session. This helped me stay on track and ensured that I was making consistent progress.

Over time, my efforts began to pay off. I noticed a significant improvement in my comprehension of the material and my performance on quizzes and assignments. The turning point came when I received a high grade on a particularly challenging exam. This achievement boosted my confidence and reaffirmed my ability to succeed in the course.

Through this experience, I learned the importance of perseverance and the value of seeking support when needed. It taught me that challenges are an opportunity for growth and that with determination and the right strategies, I can overcome obstacles. I also realized the power of collaboration and how working with others can enhance learning and problem-solving.

This challenging academic experience has had a lasting impact on me. It strengthened my resolve to pursue a career in biology and reinforced my passion for the subject. I am now more confident in my abilities and better equipped to handle future challenges, both academically and professionally.

As a Black woman in the sciences, I am aware of the importance of representation and the unique challenges that come with it. This experience has also motivated me to support and mentor others who may face similar challenges, fostering a community of encouragement and empowerment.

In conclusion, the challenges I faced in that biology course were a pivotal moment in my academic journey. They taught me resilience, the importance of seeking help, and the value of teamwork. These lessons have not only helped me succeed in my studies but have also prepared me for the challenges I will face in my future endeavors. As I continue my education and pursue my goals, I carry with me the knowledge that I can overcome any obstacle with perseverance and support.
