by Shanell - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

As a college junior majoring in Information Technology at Western Governors University, I have faced my share of academic challenges. One of the most significant hurdles I encountered was during my sophomore year, when I took on a particularly demanding course in network security. This class was known for its rigorous content and high expectations, and it was a crucial part of my degree program. Balancing this course with my other responsibilities was daunting, but it ultimately became a journey of growth and discovery.

The challenge began with the sheer volume of material that needed to be covered. The course required a deep understanding of complex concepts, such as encryption algorithms, firewall configurations, and intrusion detection systems. As someone who had always been more comfortable with the practical, hands-on aspects of IT, diving into the theoretical side was intimidating. My initial grades reflected this struggle, and I knew I needed to find a new approach if I wanted to thrive.

I realized that asking for help was the first step towards overcoming this challenge. I reached out to my professor and shared my difficulties. This was a humbling experience, as I had always prided myself on being able to handle my coursework independently. However, my professor was incredibly supportive and provided additional resources, such as supplementary readings and practice exercises, to help me grasp the more challenging concepts. He also encouraged me to attend office hours regularly, which offered me the chance to ask questions and receive personalized guidance.

In addition to seeking help from my professor, I formed a study group with some of my classmates. This was a turning point for me, as it allowed me to collaborate with others who were facing similar challenges. We met regularly to review course materials, discuss difficult topics, and quiz each other on key concepts. This collaborative approach not only helped me to better understand the material, but it also provided a sense of camaraderie and support that was invaluable during this stressful time.

To further enhance my understanding, I turned to online resources and tutorials. There is a wealth of information available on the internet, and I found several websites and forums dedicated to network security topics. These resources offered different perspectives and explanations that complemented what I was learning in class. I also watched video lectures and demonstrations, which helped to solidify my understanding of complex processes through visual and auditory learning.

Time management was another crucial factor in overcoming this academic challenge. With a college GPA of 2.7, I knew I needed to improve my organizational skills to keep up with the demands of the course. I started using a planner to map out my weekly schedule, allocating specific time slots for studying, attending study group sessions, and completing assignments. This structure helped me to stay on track and avoid last-minute cramming, which had been a source of stress in the past.

Throughout this experience, I learned the importance of resilience and adaptability. There were times when I felt overwhelmed and doubted my ability to succeed, but I reminded myself of my goals and the reasons why I chose to pursue a degree in Information Technology. As a Black and Native American woman in a predominantly male field, I am driven by the desire to break barriers and serve as a role model for others who may face similar challenges. This motivation kept me focused and determined, even when the going got tough.

By the end of the semester, my hard work and dedication paid off. I managed to improve my grades significantly, and I gained a deeper understanding of network security that has been invaluable in my subsequent courses. More importantly, I emerged from this experience with a renewed sense of confidence in my abilities and a greater appreciation for the power of collaboration and seeking help when needed.

This journey taught me valuable lessons in perseverance, teamwork, and resourcefulness. These skills will serve me well as I continue my academic journey and prepare for a career in Information Technology. I am grateful for the support I received from my professor and classmates, and I am proud of my ability to adapt and grow in the face of adversity. This experience has strengthened my resolve to succeed and make a positive impact in my field, and I am hopeful about the future and the opportunities that lie ahead.
