Why Interior Design? by Shelby - April 2025 Scholarship Essay
I have known what I wanted to major in for my whole life, Interior Design. From the moment I learned what both words meant, I was hooked. When I try to pinpoint a reason why, it really comes from my childhood. In our free time, my dad and I would visit open houses. The smell of a new house, the spotless furniture and untouched appliances. That feeling is what made me fall in love with houses. Growing up, I was the creative kid, the one who got paint sets on her birthday and crayons if I was behaving. I also had a unique quirk, I loved to organize. I remember a time when I was 9, I was invited to classmate’s birthday but when I arrived, I didn’t go play in the bounce house or her barbies, I was found in her closet, organizing said toys. Her mother was grateful and mine laughed, “Shelby, the clean freak,” I had been labeled. It was a badge of honor for me and an ideal I still attribute. Interior design is the major I picked when I was 9 because it is the perfect mix of everything I love to do, creative and logical, math and color, organization and liberation. Interior design also leads to innovative careers such as Architecture and offers the student an opportunity to expand themselves in more technical careers in addition to the creatives.
