Determination by SkyLaa - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

Throughout my high school journey, I have faced several challenges, but one academic experience stands out as particularly formative. It was during my junior year when I took on the challenge of Advanced Placement (AP) Chemistry. I had always been fascinated by the sciences, but chemistry was a subject that pushed me to my limits.

From the start, AP Chemistry was unlike any class I had taken before. The concepts were complex, and the pace was fast. I remember the first time I sat down with the textbook; it felt like I was trying to learn a new language. The periodic table, chemical equations, and laboratory techniques were all daunting. Despite my interest in science, I found myself struggling to keep up.

The first few tests did not go as well as I had hoped. I scored lower than I ever had in any subject, and it was disheartening. I felt overwhelmed and began to doubt my abilities. However, I knew that giving up was not an option. I was determined to overcome this challenge not just for the grade, but to prove to myself that I could handle difficult material.

The first step I took was to change my approach to studying. I realized that my usual methods were not effective for this level of complexity. I began to dedicate more time to reviewing the material, breaking down each chapter into smaller, manageable sections. I also started using online resources, like educational videos and forums, to get different perspectives on the topics I was studying.

Additionally, I reached out for help, something I had rarely done before. I attended after-school tutoring sessions and formed a study group with some classmates. These sessions were invaluable because they allowed me to see how others approached the same problems. My classmates and I would work through practice problems together, each of us contributing our strengths to help each other understand the material better.

One of the most significant turning points was when I approached my teacher for extra help. Initially, I was hesitant because I did not want to admit that I was struggling. However, my teacher was incredibly supportive and patient. She explained the concepts in a way that finally made sense to me and provided additional resources to aid my understanding. Her encouragement gave me the confidence to keep pushing forward.

As I continued to work hard and adapt my study habits, I gradually began to see improvement. My test scores started to rise, and I felt more comfortable with the material. The experience taught me the importance of resilience and adaptability. I learned that it is okay to ask for help and that collaboration can be a powerful tool in overcoming challenges.

By the end of the year, I had not only improved my grade but had developed a genuine appreciation for chemistry. The struggle I faced in AP Chemistry taught me valuable lessons that extend beyond academics. It showed me that perseverance and a willingness to seek help can lead to success, even in the face of difficulty.

This experience has also influenced my future aspirations. As someone interested in pre-med and psychology, I know that the path ahead will be filled with rigorous courses and challenges. However, I am confident that the skills I gained from overcoming my struggles in AP Chemistry will serve me well in college and beyond. Whether it is tackling tough courses or working in a collaborative environment, I am prepared to face challenges head-on.

In conclusion, the challenging experience of AP Chemistry was a pivotal moment in my academic journey. It taught me the value of hard work, the importance of seeking help, and the power of persistence. These lessons have not only helped me succeed in high school but have also prepared me for the challenges I will face in college and my future career. I am grateful for the experience, as it has shaped me into a more resilient and determined student.
