Bridging Science and Compassion: My Journey to Medicine through Biochemistry at Spelman College by Sonia - April 2025 Scholarship Essay

I plan to major in biochemistry at Spelman College because it offers the ideal foundation for my long-term goal of becoming a physician. Biochemistry bridges my love for science with my passion for helping others. I’m especially drawn to how this field explores the chemical processes that govern the human body—knowledge that is essential for understanding, diagnosing, and treating complex medical conditions.
Spelman’s rigorous curriculum and outstanding faculty make it the perfect environment for me to grow intellectually and prepare for a career in healthcare. I am excited to take courses like organic and inorganic chemistry to strengthen my analytical thinking and deepen my understanding of disease at the molecular level. I look forward to learning under professors such as Dr. Saduni Arachchi and Dr. Janae Baptiste Brown, whose work in medicinal chemistry and student-centered mentorship inspires me to pursue academic excellence with purpose.
The experimental, hands-on nature of chemistry is what excites me most. I am eager to participate in laboratory research, where I can explore innovative solutions to real-world health issues. These research experiences will not only enhance my scientific skills but also help prepare me for the demands of medical school.
As a complementary interest, I also plan to explore health science courses that focus on public health, healthcare systems, and the social factors that affect well-being. Understanding the broader context of health—particularly for underserved communities—is crucial to becoming a well-rounded, empathetic physician. Spelman’s commitment to community engagement, leadership, and sisterhood wellness aligns with my desire to advocate for equitable healthcare access.
By majoring in biochemistry and supplementing my studies with health science, I aim to build a strong scientific foundation while also gaining a holistic perspective on patient care. I believe Spelman’s academic environment and mission-driven approach will equip me with the knowledge, discipline, and compassion to succeed in medicine and serve communities with integrity and purpose.
