Schooling's Causation of Social Shortfalls by Sophia - May 2025 Scholarship Essay

Spending 13 years in an organized K-12 school system teaches students lessons far beyond the breadth of their in-class lectures. Past the state testing requirements, Common Core math concepts, and reading comprehension measurements, there are fundamentals in social and emotional learning taught both intentionally and unintentionally every day. Having these attributes is a vital piece in every student, as they determine whether students feel accepted and welcomed in their school’s atmosphere. Without these building blocks, students would see school as a perilous institution filled with drills and unwelcome academics. This is no way to complete your schooling process.
Unfortunately, for many young students, this fact is constantly a reality. I have learned that going to school every day is a chore that brings zero uplifting and socially positive attributes for some. This is because their academic needs are not met, and therefore they are left falling behind, getting made fun of, and feeling out of place in what is supposed to be a child’s sanctuary. By using the hypothetically provided “unlimited” time and money the way I wish, these students would receive the support they need to succeed academically and lead a flourished social upbringing. The money and time would be spent on research that both invents and disperses these supplies to all in need. In my mind, I imagine that the materials needed would include early diagnoses of learning disabilities, advancements in assistive technology, and alternative testing methods.
By giving these students the reinforcements they need to stay on par academically, it is much more likely that they will find the positives of coming to school, instead of dreading each class. This would assist the world because the number of graduates and educated workers would increase, leading to additional advancements around the globe.
