Educational Advantage by Stephanie - December 2016 Scholarship Essay

During my junior year of high school my family moved to a different city, this meant that I would transfer schools. I was upset because I knew that I wouldn’t have the same opportunities in another school that I did at my current school. Sure enough when I transferred schools I immediately noticed the difference of environment; the careless attitude of teachers and students. I begged my mom to transfer me back to my old school but she said that there was no possible way that she could take me to school. Although my new house was significantly far my friend offered to take me to school and back everyday. It took a great deal of effort to be able to go back to my school so I knew that if my mom had given me the opportunity I had to prove to her how academically devoted I was.
I signed up for dual enrollment classes which are college classes that are given after school either on the college campus or a professor came to the school. I went to school from seven in the morning to nine at night. My schedule was definitely tough, I was in school for up to fourteen hours. Not only did I take dual enrollment classes but I also took AP classes. My AP classes were certainly rigorous especially the amount of homework that was assigned. In addition to getting home late I had no time to relax because my homework began piling up between my regular high school homework and college homework. There were days that I couldn’t handle the stress and I would break down in class because I was physically and mentally exhausted.
This was without a doubt a life lesson, I taught myself how to cope with stress. I also learned that it’s okay to ask for help, my friends were always very helpful they took me to school and to my college classes because they knew my mom was always busy working. I was able to pass all my AP classes and my dual enrollment classes which was one of the most rewarding accomplishments. I realized that when you truly want something there is always a way to obtain your goal.
