Academic Journey by Su - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

As I reflect on my academic journey, one challenging experience that stands out is my first semester at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Transitioning from high school to college was a significant change, and I found myself struggling to adapt to the new environment and expectations. The workload was heavier, the classes were larger, and the independence I had always craved now felt daunting.

During that first semester, I enrolled in a course that was particularly challenging for me: Introduction to Business Statistics. Math had never been my strongest subject, and the pace of the class was much faster than I was used to. I remember sitting in the lecture hall, feeling overwhelmed by the complex formulas and data analysis techniques. The professor moved quickly through the material, and I often left class feeling confused and discouraged.

My initial attempts to study on my own were not very successful. I spent hours reviewing my notes and textbooks, but I still struggled to grasp the concepts. My grades on the first few quizzes reflected my difficulties, and I began to worry that I would not be able to pass the class. This was a blow to my confidence, especially since I was passionate about pursuing a career in business.

Realizing that I needed to change my approach, I decided to seek help. I started by attending the professor's office hours, where I could ask questions and get clarification on topics I did not understand. The professor was patient and willing to explain things in different ways until I grasped them. This one-on-one interaction made a significant difference, as I was able to learn at my own pace and focus on the areas where I needed the most help.

In addition to office hours, I joined a study group with some of my classmates. This was a turning point for me because it allowed me to learn collaboratively. We would meet a few times a week to review the material together, work on practice problems, and share different strategies for understanding the content. Being part of a group helped me realize that I was not alone in my struggles, and it provided a supportive environment where I could ask questions without feeling embarrassed.

I also took advantage of the university's tutoring services. The tutors were fellow students who had successfully completed the course, and they offered valuable insights and tips. Working with a tutor helped me break down the material into manageable parts and develop effective study habits. I learned to prioritize my time better, focusing on the most critical topics and gradually building my understanding.

As the semester progressed, I noticed a change in my performance. I started to feel more confident in my abilities, and my quiz and test scores improved. The concepts that once seemed impossible to understand began to make sense, and I was able to apply them to real-world scenarios, which deepened my interest in the subject.

By the end of the semester, I had not only passed the class but also developed a newfound confidence in tackling challenging subjects. This experience taught me the importance of perseverance, seeking help when needed, and the value of collaboration. It also reinforced my commitment to my studies in business and human resources, as I realized that overcoming obstacles is an integral part of growth and success.

Looking back, I am grateful for the challenges I faced in that statistics class. They pushed me out of my comfort zone and taught me valuable lessons that extend beyond academics. I learned that it is okay to struggle and that asking for help is a strength, not a weakness. This experience has prepared me for future challenges in my academic and professional journey, and it has instilled in me a resilience that I will carry forward.

As I continue my studies in business administration and human resources, I am motivated by the knowledge that I can overcome difficulties with determination and support. I am excited to apply the skills I have gained to my future career and to contribute positively to the field. Winning this scholarship would further support my educational goals and enable me to continue pursuing my passion with confidence.
