Teaching to Nursing by Taamar - June 2017 Scholarship Essay

When I was younger, my ultimate goal was be exactly like my mother, my role model. So since I wanted to be like her so much, I deiced to do everything that she did, and this meant becoming a classroom teacher. Up until high school, I always thought that I would become a teacher just like my mother. As I grew older I realized that in order to do this, you have to be incredibly passionate about it because the perks of teaching are not ideal. I quickly began looking for a new career path, my father's, which was healthcare.

Given that I expressed interest in the medical field; my father saw it imperative that I volunteer in a hospital to ensure that I was comfortable with its atmosphere. So for the past four years, I have been volunteering at Methodist Mansfield Medical Center, where my father also works. At first, I volunteered in the hospital gift shop and I knew that I would not receive the experience needed for a clinical profession so I switched to outpatient registration. Here, I would engage in small conversations with patients and also learn about what operation, screening, or test they would be having done. I would then help cardiologists, radiologists, and respiratory therapists by faxing over specific medical records, to aid in treatment plans. I was glad to help because at the same time, I was learning how the hospital operates. Even though I did not do as much clinical volunteering as I wanted, the experience made a lasting impact on my life.

I chose nursing as my major because it gives me the opportunity to practice my passion. I belong in healthcare due to my caring nature and compassionate heart and nursing is the right profession for me. I recently interviewed a nurse practitioner and she informed me that nurses run the hospital; without them, doctors are overwhelmed with patients and most importantly, stress. Nursing is a critical role in the healing profession; this insight confirmed that nursing is where I am destined to be. So, my career goals have definitely changed, but my mission has not. I still aim to use my skills to help and positively affect others.
