Challanges by Tallinn - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
My name is Tallinn Loberg, and I have always been fascinated by the mysteries of the universe. Ever since I was young, I have been captivated by the stars and the fundamental forces that govern our world. As I grew older, my interests expanded to include nuclear engineering, chemistry, and chemical engineering. These fields promise not only to unlock the secrets of the universe but also to solve some of the most pressing issues facing our planet today.
However, my journey toward understanding these complex subjects has not been without its challenges. One of the most significant academic hurdles I faced was during my junior year of high school in my Advanced Placement Chemistry class. Chemistry had always intrigued me, but the AP level was a whole new ballgame. The concepts were more abstract, and the pace was much faster than anything I had experienced before.
The first few weeks of the class were overwhelming. I struggled to grasp the intricacies of chemical bonding and thermodynamics. My grades on the initial quizzes and tests were not what I had hoped for, and I began to doubt my ability to succeed in the class. The pressure was intense because I knew that a strong performance in AP Chemistry was crucial for my future aspirations in science and engineering.
I realized that I needed to change my approach if I wanted to overcome this challenge. The first step was to seek help. I started attending after-school study sessions with my chemistry teacher, who was incredibly supportive and patient. These sessions allowed me to ask questions and gain a deeper understanding of the material. My teacher's enthusiasm for the subject was contagious, and it reignited my passion for chemistry.
In addition to seeking help from my teacher, I formed a study group with a few classmates. We met regularly to go over difficult concepts, work on practice problems, and quiz each other. This collaborative approach was invaluable because it allowed us to learn from each other's strengths and weaknesses. Explaining concepts to my peers also helped reinforce my own understanding.
I also realized the importance of developing effective study habits. I began setting aside dedicated time each day to review my notes and work through practice problems. I found that breaking down complex topics into smaller, manageable chunks made them less intimidating. I also made use of online resources, such as educational videos and forums, to supplement my learning.
Another key factor in overcoming this challenge was maintaining a positive mindset. There were times when I felt frustrated and discouraged, but I reminded myself of my passion for science and my long-term goals. I learned to view setbacks as opportunities for growth rather than as failures. This shift in perspective helped me stay motivated and resilient.
By the end of the semester, my hard work and determination paid off. My grades improved significantly, and I gained a solid understanding of the core concepts in chemistry. More importantly, I developed a newfound confidence in my ability to tackle difficult subjects. This experience taught me that perseverance, collaboration, and a willingness to seek help are essential components of academic success.
This challenging experience in AP Chemistry not only strengthened my resolve to pursue a career in science and engineering but also prepared me for future challenges. I know that the road ahead will be filled with obstacles, especially as I aim to study at prestigious institutions like the University of California Berkeley and Tufts University. However, I am confident that the skills I have developed during this time will serve me well in my academic journey.
In conclusion, facing and overcoming the challenge of AP Chemistry was a pivotal moment in my academic career. It taught me the value of seeking help, working collaboratively, and maintaining a positive attitude in the face of adversity. These lessons have shaped me into a more resilient and determined student, ready to take on the exciting challenges that lie ahead in the fields of nuclear engineering, astronomy, and beyond. I am grateful for the opportunity to share my story and for the chance to continue my education with the support of this scholarship.
