Band of the Community by Taylon - January 2017 Scholarship Essay

Being a part of the band has allowed me to assist in promoting change in our community. One of the ways that we were able to impact change in our community is when we volunteered in the Soup Man event. This event provides clothing, and a one night stay at an upscale hotel to the homeless. Our role is to play the theme of Soup Man as the less fortunate walk along a red carpet to their hotel rooms.
Normally when people see a homeless person along the side of the road they’d demoralize them. Many times when people are driving they’ll see a homeless person walk up to their door for supplies. Naturally they’d respond to this by locking their doors, or quickly speeding off as though it’s a criminal. After having the opportunity to interact and hear the stories of the homeless of how they came to be, I realized that I have a possibility of being homeless as well. I have been so inspired by participating with Soup Man that I have done this event for the past 4 years with the band.
With a small portion of the band, we visited elementary and junior high schools to encourage the student to join us. There, we were able to inform them about the Soup Man, and how it gave the homeless a chance to feel equivalent to middle class citizens. We also utilized the opportunity to encourage them to help the community by donating or volunteering with local charities. One way that I will continue to assist the community after I leave the band is by participating with my church by working in the local food bank. It provides free food to low income families. I plan on making this a lifetime hobby since I find it enjoyable, and rewarding by being able to positively impact my community with hope.
