My challenging academic experience by Taylor - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

As a college sophomore at California State University - Long Beach, majoring in Public Health, I have encountered several academic challenges. However, one of the most significant challenges I faced was during my freshman year when I had to take an introductory biology course. This course was a prerequisite for my major, and it was known for being particularly demanding. Balancing the rigorous coursework with my other responsibilities was not easy, and it tested my resilience and determination.

The first few weeks of the biology course were overwhelming. The sheer volume of information, combined with the fast-paced lectures, made it difficult for me to keep up. I found myself struggling to understand complex concepts and terminology, which was frustrating. My initial confidence began to waver, and I realized I needed to change my approach if I wanted to succeed.

The first step I took was to seek help. I started attending office hours with my professor, which was intimidating at first. However, I quickly realized how beneficial it was to discuss the material one-on-one. My professor was patient and provided additional explanations that helped clarify my doubts. This experience taught me the importance of not being afraid to ask for help and utilizing the resources available to me.

In addition to attending office hours, I joined a study group with some classmates. This group became a crucial support system for me. We met regularly to review lecture notes, discuss difficult topics, and quiz each other. The collaborative nature of the study group made learning more interactive and less isolating. I discovered that explaining concepts to others helped reinforce my understanding, and hearing different perspectives often provided new insights.

Time management also became essential. I had to balance my biology course with other classes and commitments. To manage my workload effectively, I started using a planner to organize my schedule. Moreover, overcoming this academic challenge reinforced my passion for Public Health. It reminded me why I chose this field of study and strengthened my commitment to making a difference in the community. I am determined to use my education to address health disparities and improve access to healthcare, particularly for underrepresented communities like my own.
