Less Homework by Uchechukwu - January 2015 Scholarship Essay

If I could give advice to a teacher, it would be to assign less homework. Homework adds on to the stress of students and can greatly interfere with their other obligations.

Students, specifically high school seniors, have a lot to deal with. Seniors have to start taking bigger steps towards their life goals during their graduating year: This includes applying for scholarships, colleges, and more. Many applications of which require writing supplements such as essays. The piling of homework assignments on students interferes with their other essays that could determine whether or not they get into a college or receive financial aid.

Finances become a major problem in students’ lives at this point. Along with paying off senior dues and raising money for senior activities, students are also thinking of the cost of college. All of the work and money worries on a student can be very stressful, even to the point of losing sleep over it. The loss of sleep can lead to a lack of production in daily and academic activities which can prove to be detrimental.

Also, students have other things going on in their lives. Some students have jobs and many will go to their jobs right after school. Others have activities going on such as community services and sports. These activities require a lot of one’s time and attention. The load on a senior’s back is enough to deal with even without homework. Teachers could at least help out a little by assigning little-to-no homework and make a student’s life a tad bit more manageable.
