Chemistry by Victoria - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
As I sit down to reflect on my academic journey, one experience stands out as particularly challenging. It was during my sophomore year of high school when I encountered a subject that tested my perseverance and determination in ways I had never anticipated: chemistry.
Chemistry, with its complex concepts and intricate equations, was a subject that initially seemed insurmountable to me. I had always been a diligent student, maintaining a high GPA and excelling in most of my classes. However, chemistry was different. The periodic table, stoichiometry, and chemical reactions all felt like a foreign language. Despite my efforts, I struggled to grasp the material and it showed in my grades. For the first time in my academic career, I was faced with the possibility of not achieving the standard I had set for myself.
The turning point came after I received a disappointing grade on a major test. I realized that my usual study methods were not enough. I needed a new approach. This realization was both humbling and motivating. I knew I had to tackle this challenge head-on if I wanted to succeed.
The first step I took was to seek help. I reached out to my chemistry teacher, who was incredibly supportive. She spent extra time with me after school, patiently explaining the concepts I found difficult. Her encouragement and willingness to help made a significant difference. I also formed a study group with a few classmates who were also struggling. Together, we worked through problems, shared notes, and quizzed each other. This collaborative environment not only made studying more effective but also more enjoyable.
In addition to seeking help, I changed my study habits. I began dedicating a specific time each day to chemistry, breaking down the material into manageable sections. I used online resources, such as educational videos and interactive quizzes, to supplement my learning. These tools allowed me to visualize the concepts and practice them in different ways, which was crucial for my understanding.
Another important aspect of overcoming this challenge was learning to be patient with myself. I realized that mastering chemistry would not happen overnight. It required consistent effort and a positive mindset. I started to celebrate small victories, like solving a difficult equation or understanding a new concept. These achievements boosted my confidence and motivated me to keep pushing forward.
As the semester progressed, my hard work began to pay off. My grades improved, and I started to enjoy chemistry. I discovered that I had a passion for the subject, which was surprising given my initial struggles. This newfound interest played a significant role in my decision to pursue a major in pharmacy at South Dakota State University. Chemistry is a fundamental part of pharmacy, and overcoming my struggles with it gave me the confidence to pursue this field.
Reflecting on this experience, I realize that it taught me valuable lessons that extend beyond academics. I learned the importance of resilience and adaptability. Challenges are a part of life, and how we respond to them defines our character. I also learned the value of seeking help and working collaboratively with others. No one has to face difficulties alone, and there is strength in community.
This challenging experience has prepared me for future academic pursuits and has given me the tools to tackle any obstacles I may encounter in college. I am grateful for the support I received from my teacher and peers, and for the opportunity to grow as a student and as an individual. As I look forward to attending South Dakota State University and pursuing a career in pharmacy, I am confident that the skills and lessons I have learned will serve me well.
In conclusion, my journey with chemistry was a challenging academic experience that tested my perseverance and adaptability. By seeking help, changing my study habits, and maintaining a positive mindset, I was able to overcome this challenge and discover a passion for a subject I once found daunting. This experience has not only prepared me for my future studies but has also shaped me into a more resilient and determined individual. I am excited to take these lessons with me as I embark on my college journey and pursue my dream of becoming a pharmacist.
