Academic Challenges by Victoria - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

A time I felt like I was going against a challenging academic experience was my junior year in Chemistry. This was very hard for me to get through the whole year since the teachers would be fast-paced teaching and they would be very inconsistent. They would grade differently which made no sense since there would be a different grade on each paper of me and my classmates, even if we got the same answers. One student would get a B but the other would get a C, even if they had the same thing. Also, the teacher was hard for me to understand, and this class caused much stress and hardship for me. Many times I would cry to my parents since I could not figure out what to do in the class and felt like I was always out of place. It did not help that I had to miss school during the year for my doctor appointments, this caused me to get behind sometimes. Then during those times when I missed a day, it would be hard for me to get help since I was not there to “learn” about the subject. This is very understandable, but at the same time, I feel like a teacher should understand that I was gone for a reason and it's their job to help me.
Overall I had to realize that that I will have to teach myself during the year. I tried to change classes but to graduate I needed to have this class. Also, it was pasted the two weeks where I could change classes, so it would show as an F on my transcript. Even if I took a college chemistry class. I had to stay in this class no matter what.
So to overcome this I had my parents call the principal about this situation multiple times. While the year went on, I had to tuff it out and make sure all my work was done. I'm a student who strives to get good grades but I had to come to myself and realize that I might not get the grade that is ideal for me in this class. As long as I passed this class, I would not have to take this class again or have to step foot into the classroom. Overall it still affects me from what I had to go through in the class but I'm glad I was able to pass this class with a grade that I was trying to get by a lot of studying and asking for help from other students.
