A look on Standardized Learning by Vincent - March 2017 Scholarship Essay

If I was to have to give a speech to a school-wide audience, I would broach upon the topic of standardized education. There is a large amount of controversy on this topic. One side of the argument would fight that every single individual student is different, they all learn differently, they have different capacities, and that no two children are the same.

Many people make the judgment that public school is like telling a bunch of different animals to climb a tree, in that some will be better and more equipped than others, such as a monkey versus an elephant. Though the other side is that there are simply too many people to have an individualistic approach to teaching. For example, in 2016 there were 50.4 million children attending public schools. To attempt to take an individualistic approach would be realistically unfeasible.

I would likely take the other side and explain how the public school system is already doing as much as it really can with its capabilities, it has to deal with problems such as budget cuts, government interference. And there are many programs in place in order to offer a better chance for students, there are accelerated and gifted programs for natural learners, and there are programs such as E.S.E to either help gifted students get ahead or assist people with disabilities get a proper education.
In order to be realistic I would show both sides, not only including one in my speech, to help educate people who haven't looked as far into it as I have. That is what I would have my speech be on if I was going to give one to a school-wide audience.
