How I picked my future! by Waylon - April 2025 Scholarship Essay
Life can hand you so many challenges and rewards. Everyday is something new that you have to deal with, the good and the bad. It has taught me that everyone has a purpose in life and that sometimes people need a little more help than others. It is up to you to make the most of everyday no matter how much chaos and tragedy is going on.
My Grandma passed away in October of 2021 from cancer. My family had to take care of her as she lived alone. I see how hard she fought up until the final moments of her life. She was truly an inspiration to me. She would get sick from her chemo treatments and my Mom, Dad, and myself would take turns helping her. It could be the smallest task like picking up her groceries or making her dinner but it made her day a little easier and brighter. Once she was home on Hospice that is when the 24 hour care was needed. I wanted to help her as much as I could as she was always there for me. From every sporting event, band concert, and my plays she was always there offering her support.
We always had a special bond for music. We would sing and dance to all kinds of music. This is what made me want to go to college to Major in Multimedia Journalism. I will be a first generation college student in my family and I want to make her proud. By becoming a radio host I can help others get through the good times and the bad with music. Just like music helped us with dealing with life challenges. It could be a great dancing song on the radio to boost your mood and bring you joy. There can also be the sad songs that make you cry and that's alright. You may have had an experience that you can relate to a song and it brings back memories. She always found the good in everyone. She struggled with her illness but fought through it to still succeed in life. My Grandma taught me to make the most of everyday no matter what life throws at you. She taught me that things will be alright even though you have a bad day here and there. Never give up as everything happens for a reason. Whatever life hands you makes you a stronger person over time.
After getting my degree in multimedia journalism, I would like to find a job where I will be successful and not only that but have fun doing what I have desired my whole life. Firstly, I would like to secure a job in a position where I can put my knowledge to work at one of our local radio stations. I would like to start as a radio show host. If I were to secure this role, I would talk about the news and play songs that everyone knows. Secondly, I would like to give a voice to the people by going out and interviewing community members at large events. I want to cover stories that will gain interest and not bore people. Lastly, I am committed to staying up to date on news stories and keeping up with trends by checking what is trending every day. I would like to collaborate with other news stations to get the whole insider look of what is going on. As a first-generation college student, I feel that receiving this scholarship will help me pursue my dreams and focus on my studies by giving financial assistance to apply towards tuition. It will also motivate me to keep striving toward my long-term career goals. In conclusion, everything that I have accomplished and experienced in my high school career has set me up to follow the career path that I have wanted to pursue for many years.
