by WIDMARCK - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

My name is Widmarck Luberisse, and I am currently a second-year graduate student at Freed-Hardeman University, majoring in Science. Throughout my academic journey, I have faced many challenges, but one particular experience stands out as a defining moment in my life. It tested my perseverance, resilience, and determination, and ultimately, it taught me valuable lessons that I carry with me today.

During my first year of graduate school, I encountered a particularly challenging course in advanced molecular biology. The subject matter was complex, and the pace of the class was fast. I quickly realized that my usual study habits were not sufficient to keep up with the material. Despite attending all the lectures and labs, I found myself struggling to grasp the concepts and apply them to the assignments and exams.

The first exam was a wake-up call. I had studied hard, but the grade I received was far below my expectations. It was disheartening, and I began to doubt my ability to succeed in the course. However, I knew that giving up was not an option. I was determined to overcome this challenge and prove to myself that I could master the material.

The first step I took was to reassess my study habits. I realized that I needed to be more proactive in my learning. I started by setting aside dedicated time each day to review my notes and read the textbook thoroughly. I made it a point to focus on understanding the underlying principles rather than just memorizing facts. This approach helped me build a stronger foundation in the subject.

I also reached out for help. I began attending office hours regularly, where I could ask my professor questions and seek clarification on topics I found difficult. My professor was supportive and provided additional resources that were instrumental in my understanding of the material. Additionally, I formed a study group with some of my classmates. Working together allowed us to share insights and explain concepts to one another, which reinforced our learning.

Another important aspect of overcoming this challenge was learning to manage my time effectively. Balancing coursework, lab work, and other responsibilities was overwhelming at times. I started using a planner to organize my schedule and set realistic goals for each week. This helped me stay on track and avoid last-minute cramming, which was ineffective for such a demanding course.

As the semester progressed, I began to see improvements. My grades gradually increased, and I felt more confident in my understanding of the material. The hard work and dedication were paying off. By the time the final exam came around, I was well-prepared and performed significantly better than I had on the first exam. It was a proud moment, and it reinforced my belief in the power of perseverance and determination.

This challenging academic experience taught me several important lessons. First, it showed me the value of seeking help and collaborating with others. No one has to face challenges alone, and there are always people willing to support and guide you. Second, it highlighted the importance of effective time management and setting achievable goals. Finally, it reminded me that setbacks are not failures; they are opportunities to learn and grow.

As a Black man pursuing a degree in science, I am aware of the unique challenges and barriers that exist in my field. However, experiences like this have strengthened my resolve to succeed and contribute positively to the scientific community. I am committed to using my education to make a difference and inspire others who may face similar challenges.

In conclusion, the challenging experience I faced in my advanced molecular biology course was a pivotal moment in my academic journey. It tested my limits and pushed me to develop new strategies for success. By reassessing my study habits, seeking help, and managing my time effectively, I was able to overcome the obstacles and achieve my goals. This experience has prepared me for future challenges and has made me a stronger, more resilient student. I am grateful for the lessons I have learned and look forward to applying them as I continue my education and pursue my dreams.
