Balance by Wissal - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

My name is Wissal Chichou, and I am a rising freshman, eager to begin my college journey as a Political Science major. As I reflect on my high school years, I am reminded of a challenging academic experience that shaped my approach to learning and problem-solving. This experience not only tested my resilience but also taught me the importance of seeking help and staying determined.

During my junior year, I enrolled in an Advanced Placement U.S. Government and Politics class. I was excited because it aligned with my interest in politics and government, but I soon realized that the course was more demanding than I had anticipated. The sheer volume of information, coupled with the analytical skills required, was overwhelming. I found myself struggling to keep up with the readings and the pace of the class discussions. My grades were not where I wanted them to be, and I felt discouraged.

At first, I tried to handle everything on my own, believing that I could manage if I just worked harder. I spent hours poring over textbooks and notes, but my efforts did not seem to translate into the understanding or grades I hoped for. It was a difficult time, as I had always been a diligent student, and this was the first time I felt truly challenged in an academic setting.

Realizing that my approach was not working, I decided to seek help. I reached out to my teacher, who was incredibly supportive. She encouraged me to ask questions and participate more actively in class, even if I was unsure of my answers. This was a turning point for me. By engaging more in class, I began to understand the material better and gained confidence in my ability to analyze complex political concepts.

In addition to seeking help from my teacher, I formed a study group with a few classmates. We met regularly to discuss the material, share insights, and quiz each other on key concepts. This collaborative approach not only made studying more enjoyable but also provided different perspectives that enriched my understanding of the subject.

Furthermore, I made use of online resources and practice exams to reinforce my learning. I discovered various educational websites and videos that explained the material in different ways, making it easier for me to grasp difficult concepts. The practice exams helped me identify areas where I needed more focus and allowed me to track my progress over time.

Through these efforts, my grades gradually improved, and I ended the course with a strong understanding of U.S. government and politics. More importantly, I learned valuable lessons about perseverance and the importance of seeking support when needed. This experience taught me that it is okay to ask for help and that collaboration can be a powerful tool in overcoming challenges.

As I prepare to enter college, I carry these lessons with me. I know that the transition to college-level coursework will come with its own set of challenges, but I feel better equipped to handle them. I am committed to staying proactive in my studies, seeking help when needed, and collaborating with peers to enrich my learning experience.

This challenging academic experience has reinforced my passion for political science and my desire to understand the complexities of government and politics. It has also strengthened my resolve to pursue a career in this field, where I hope to make a positive impact by applying the skills and knowledge I gain in college.

In conclusion, overcoming the difficulties I faced in my AP U.S. Government and Politics class taught me resilience, the value of seeking support, and the importance of collaboration. These lessons have prepared me for the academic challenges that lie ahead in college and beyond. I am grateful for the opportunity to share my story and for the chance to pursue my academic and career goals with the help of this scholarship.
