Struggles with organic chemistry by Yolanda - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
My name is Yolanda Dorado-Cooremans, and I am currently a first-year graduate student pursuing a degree in Education. As I reflect on my academic journey, one particular challenge stands out, and it has profoundly shaped my approach to learning and teaching.
During my undergraduate studies, I was enrolled in a demanding course on organic chemistry. The course was notorious for its rigorous curriculum and high expectations. I quickly realized that the course was more challenging than I had anticipated.
The material was dense, and the pace was fast. We were required to read and analyze complex theories, conduct research, and apply these concepts to real-world educational settings. As someone who had always been a diligent student, I was surprised to find myself struggling to keep up. My grades on the first few assignments were lower than I expected, and I felt overwhelmed.
I knew I had to find a way to overcome these difficulties, not only to succeed in the course but also to prepare myself for my future career as an educator. The first step I took was to reach out for help. I attended office hours with my professor, who provided valuable insights and guidance. She helped me understand the importance of connecting theoretical concepts with practical applications, which was a crucial turning point for me.
Additionally, I formed a study group with some of my classmates. This was incredibly beneficial because it allowed us to share different perspectives and clarify our understanding of the material. We would meet regularly to discuss readings, quiz each other, and work through challenging problems together. This collaborative approach not only improved my comprehension but also built a sense of community and support.
Another strategy that helped me was developing better time management skills. I created a detailed study schedule, breaking down the coursework into manageable chunks. This allowed me to focus on specific topics each day, reducing the feeling of being overwhelmed. I also made sure to balance my study time with breaks to avoid burnout and keep my mind fresh.
Furthermore, I discovered the importance of active learning techniques. Instead of passively reading and taking notes, I started to engage with the material more interactively. I would create mind maps, summarize key points in my own words, and teach the concepts to someone else. This approach not only reinforced my understanding but also made the learning process more enjoyable.
As the semester progressed, I noticed a significant improvement in my performance. My grades started to rise, and I felt more confident in my ability to grasp complex ideas. More importantly, I developed a deeper appreciation for the subject and a stronger commitment to my goal of becoming an effective educator.
This challenging experience taught me several valuable lessons. I learned the importance of seeking help and collaborating with others, as well as the need for effective time management and active learning strategies. These skills have been invaluable in my graduate studies and will continue to serve me well in my future career.
Moreover, this experience has reinforced my belief in the power of education to transform lives. As a Hispanic woman, I am deeply aware of the barriers that many students face in accessing quality education. I am committed to using my knowledge and skills to create inclusive and supportive learning environments where all students can thrive.
In conclusion, the challenge I faced in my organic chemistry course was a pivotal moment in my academic journey. It pushed me to develop new strategies, seek support, and ultimately grow as a student and future educator. I am grateful for the experience because it has prepared me to tackle future challenges with resilience and determination. I am excited to continue my studies and contribute to the field of education, helping to inspire and empower the next generation of learners.
