Perseverance and Growth: Overcoming Challenges in Organic Chemistry by Yousef - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
My journey as a Biotechnology major at the University of Houston-Downtown has been filled with both rewarding and challenging experiences. One of the most difficult academic challenges I have faced was during my second year when I struggled with Organic Chemistry. This subject is known for its complexity, but I did not anticipate just how tough it would be for me. It was a real turning point in my college career, and overcoming it taught me valuable lessons about perseverance, seeking help, and adapting my study habits.
When I first started Organic Chemistry, I was overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information and the level of detail required to understand the material. The concepts were abstract, and I found it challenging to visualize the molecular structures and reactions. My initial test scores reflected my struggles, and I began to doubt my abilities. It was disheartening to see my GPA, which was already not as high as I wanted, take a hit. I realized that if I did not change my approach, I would continue to struggle in this and future courses.
The first step I took to overcome this challenge was to acknowledge that I needed help. I had always been somewhat reluctant to ask for assistance, thinking that I should be able to figure things out on my own. However, I realized that Organic Chemistry was not something I could tackle alone. I started attending the professor's office hours regularly, where I could ask questions and get clarifications on topics I found confusing. These sessions were incredibly helpful as they provided me with a deeper understanding of the material and allowed me to learn directly from someone who was passionate about the subject.
In addition to seeking help from my professor, I also joined a study group with some of my classmates. This was a game-changer for me because it allowed me to discuss the material with peers who were going through the same struggles. We would meet several times a week to go over lecture notes, solve practice problems, and quiz each other. Explaining concepts to others helped reinforce my own understanding, and hearing different perspectives often clarified things that I had found confusing. The camaraderie and support from my study group were invaluable, and together we were able to tackle the challenging course material.
Another strategy that helped me overcome my difficulties was changing my study habits. Previously, I had relied heavily on last-minute cramming, which clearly was not effective for a subject as detailed as Organic Chemistry. I began to adopt a more consistent study schedule, dedicating time each day to review notes and work on practice problems. This regular practice helped me retain information better and reduced the stress that came with trying to learn everything at once before an exam.
I also made use of online resources, such as educational videos and forums, which offered different explanations and visual aids that complemented my learning style. These resources were particularly helpful for visualizing molecular structures and reactions, which were a big part of what I initially struggled with.
Through these efforts, I gradually improved my understanding of Organic Chemistry and my performance in the class. By the end of the semester, I had managed to raise my grade significantly, which was a huge relief and a boost to my confidence. More importantly, I learned that seeking help is a strength, not a weakness, and that collaboration and consistent effort are key to overcoming academic challenges.
This experience taught me that setbacks are a part of the learning process and that perseverance is essential. It reinforced my commitment to my studies in Biotechnology, a field I am passionate about because of its potential to solve real-world problems and improve lives. I know that I will face more challenges in my academic journey, but I am now better equipped to handle them.
In conclusion, overcoming the challenge of Organic Chemistry was a pivotal moment in my college experience. It taught me important lessons about the power of seeking help, the value of collaboration, and the importance of adapting my study habits. These lessons will continue to guide me as I pursue my degree in Biotechnology and beyond. I am grateful for the experience because it not only improved my academic skills but also strengthened my resilience and determination to succeed.
