Overcoming Challenges and Finding Passion Through Economics by Ysabella - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
High school has been a series of lessons in resilience, but no class tested my determination more than junior-year economics. What started as an exciting dive into a field I was passionate about quickly became my most daunting academic challenge—and, ultimately, my greatest triumph.
From the start, I struggled to keep up with the fast pace and complex concepts of the class. Our teacher introduced topics like supply and demand, market equilibrium, and elasticity with the expectation that we had already mastered the basics, and I quickly fell behind. Lectures often left me feeling overwhelmed, and my confidence in my abilities began to waver.
The turning point came after I received a disappointing grade on our first major exam. Though discouraged, I knew I couldn’t let this setback define my experience. I decided to take a step back and reevaluate my approach. My first step was to meet with my teacher to discuss my difficulties. She gave me practical advice on breaking down complex concepts and recommended additional resources, like online lectures and practice problems, which became invaluable to my learning.
Building on her advice, I created a structured study schedule and joined study groups with classmates. These groups became a source of both academic and emotional support, as we worked together to tackle difficult topics. I also explored online platforms like Khan Academy, where alternative explanations often helped me grasp tricky concepts. Bit by bit, I began to approach problems from multiple angles, developing not just better grades but also a deeper understanding of economics.
By the end of the semester, my hard work paid off. My grades improved significantly, but more importantly, I discovered a genuine passion for the subject. Economics had transformed from a series of confusing formulas into a fascinating lens through which to understand the world.
Overcoming this challenge taught me invaluable lessons. I learned the importance of seeking help and using available resources—skills I’ll carry with me into college and beyond. I also discovered that perseverance and adaptability are key to overcoming obstacles. This experience solidified my desire to major in Economics and Finance, knowing these fields are both challenging and deeply rewarding.
As a Hispanic woman, I am especially proud of the resilience I demonstrated during this journey. My background has shaped my perspective and fueled my passion for understanding the systems that impact diverse communities. I am eager to use my education to create meaningful change in the world.
In conclusion, my junior-year economics class was more than just an academic challenge—it was a transformative experience that taught me resilience, collaboration, and the power of perseverance. These lessons have prepared me to face future challenges with confidence and determination.
