Academic Struggle by Zahir - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

My name is Zahir Patterson, and I am currently a sophomore at Lincoln University, majoring in Digital Communications and Media. Being a college student comes with its own set of challenges, but one academic experience stands out as particularly difficult yet transformative.

In my freshman year, I enrolled in a course called "Media Production Basics." I was excited because I have always been passionate about media and storytelling. However, I quickly realized that I was in over my head. The course required a level of technical skill and understanding that I did not have. I was familiar with social media and basic video editing, but this class demanded proficiency in software like Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects, which were entirely new to me.

The first project was to create a short film using these tools. I remember staring at the computer screen, feeling completely lost and overwhelmed. My classmates seemed to grasp the concepts quickly, while I struggled to keep up. I felt like I was falling behind, and it was frustrating. I began to doubt my abilities and wondered if I had chosen the right major.

Despite feeling discouraged, I knew I could not give up. I had to find a way to overcome this challenge. I started by reaching out to my professor, who was understanding and supportive. He suggested that I attend his office hours for extra help, and I took him up on that offer. During those sessions, he walked me through the basics of the software and provided additional resources for me to study.

I also turned to my peers for help. I formed a study group with a few classmates who were more experienced in media production. They were generous with their time and knowledge, and we spent many evenings in the computer lab, working on projects together. They taught me shortcuts and techniques that made the software less intimidating. Working with them not only improved my technical skills but also boosted my confidence.

In addition to seeking help from others, I dedicated extra time outside of class to practice. I watched countless online tutorials and experimented with different editing techniques. I would often recreate small projects just to familiarize myself with the tools. It was a lot of trial and error, but each mistake taught me something new.

As the semester progressed, I began to see improvement. The projects that once seemed impossible became manageable. By the time the final project was due, I was able to produce a short film that I was proud of. It was not perfect, but it was a significant improvement from where I started. More importantly, I had gained a deeper understanding of media production and a newfound appreciation for the creative process.

This experience taught me several valuable lessons. First, it reinforced the importance of perseverance. When faced with a challenge, it is easy to feel defeated, but persistence can lead to growth and success. Second, it highlighted the value of seeking help and collaborating with others. No one has all the answers, and learning from those around you can be incredibly beneficial. Lastly, it reminded me that learning is a journey. Mastery does not happen overnight, but with dedication and effort, progress is possible.

Overcoming this academic challenge has prepared me for future obstacles, both in my studies and in life. It has also strengthened my resolve to pursue a career in digital communications and media. I am more determined than ever to excel in my field and use my skills to tell stories that resonate with diverse audiences.

As a Black and Hispanic man, I am aware of the importance of representation in media. I hope to bring unique perspectives to the industry and contribute to a more inclusive narrative. This scholarship would not only support my education but also help me achieve my goals of making a positive impact through media.

In conclusion, the challenges I faced in my "Media Production Basics" class were daunting, but they ultimately shaped me into a more capable and resilient student. I am grateful for the experience and the lessons it taught me. I am excited to continue my journey in digital communications and media, armed with the skills and determination to succeed.
