Looking Back by Zora - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
When I look back on my academic journey, one challenging experience stands out. It was during my junior year of high school, a time when I was juggling multiple advanced classes and extracurricular activities. I had always been a dedicated student, but balancing everything was becoming increasingly difficult. The pressure was mounting, and I was struggling to keep up with the demands of my coursework.
One of the most challenging subjects for me was chemistry. Science had never been my strongest suit, and the complex concepts and equations in chemistry seemed overwhelming. I was determined to do well, but I found myself falling behind. My grades started slipping, and I felt increasingly stressed and anxious about keeping up with the rest of the class.
I knew I had to take action. The first step I took was reaching out for help. I approached my chemistry teacher after class and explained my difficulties. She was understanding and offered to help me by providing extra resources and one-on-one tutoring sessions. This was a turning point for me. Her support and encouragement made me feel more confident, and I realized that asking for help was not a sign of weakness, but a step towards improvement.
In addition to seeking help from my teacher, I also formed a study group with a few classmates. We met once a week to review the material together, share notes, and quiz each other. This collaborative approach to learning was incredibly beneficial. It not only helped me understand the material better but also made studying more enjoyable. We were able to support each other, and it was reassuring to know that I was not alone in facing these challenges.
Time management was another crucial aspect I needed to improve. With so many commitments, I had to find a way to organize my time more effectively. I started using a planner to keep track of assignments, tests, and deadlines. I also set specific goals for each study session, which helped me stay focused and make the most of my time. Breaking down tasks into smaller, manageable steps made them seem less daunting and helped me stay on track.
Despite these efforts, there were still moments of self-doubt. I questioned whether I was capable of succeeding in such a demanding subject. However, I reminded myself of my past achievements and the hard work I had put in. I learned to be patient with myself and to celebrate small victories along the way. Each time I solved a difficult problem or improved my test score, it boosted my confidence and motivated me to keep pushing forward.
Over time, my grades in chemistry began to improve. I went from feeling lost and overwhelmed to gaining a solid understanding of the material. This experience taught me the value of perseverance and the importance of seeking help when needed. It also reinforced my belief in the power of collaboration and effective time management.
As I prepare to enter college as a communications major, I carry these lessons with me. I know that college will present its own set of challenges, but I feel better equipped to handle them. I am excited to explore the world of digital communications and public relations, and I am confident that the skills I have developed will serve me well in my future studies and career.
Being a Black woman in academia, I understand the importance of representation and the impact it can have on others. I hope to inspire other young women of color to pursue their passions and overcome any obstacles they may face. My experience with chemistry has shown me that challenges are opportunities for growth, and I am ready to embrace whatever comes my way.
In conclusion, the challenges I faced in high school, particularly with chemistry, have shaped me into a more resilient and resourceful student. I learned to ask for help, collaborate with others, and manage my time effectively. These skills have not only helped me overcome academic difficulties but have also prepared me for the challenges of college life. I am grateful for the experience and the lessons it taught me, and I am eager to apply them as I embark on this new chapter in my education. With hope and determination, I look forward to the opportunities and adventures that lie ahead.
