My biology beginning by Zowie - February 2024 Scholarship Essay

When I was young, probably around five, my mom took me to one of her doctor's appointments. She had to get a shot and I asked to hold her hand so I could make her feel better, since shots had always scared me. During her shot, I held her hand, and she told me how good I was at comforting her. After she got her shot, the nurse offered to let me put on the band aid. As I was putting the band aid on her, I realized this was what I was meant to do with my life. It clicked that I wanted to take care of others, and to make a positive impact on the community to make others feel better.
Over the years, I learned that I loved science. I willingly took extra science classes for fun because of my interest in them. I especially loved biology and anatomy because I knew it was related to what I would be doing in the future. What specific type of doctor I wanted to be and how exactly I wanted to help changed over the years, but I was consistent with wanting to be someone who helped others, specifically by practicing medicine. I knew I wanted a degree in biology to start off my school and career. Eventually, I decided I wanted to be a pediatrician. I want to be able to comfort scared kids like how I comforted my mom all those years ago, while also helping them recover, and maybe even putting on band aids.
I have recently been accepted into my chosen major of biology at the University of Texas at Austin. I am so excited to learn new things and do more research. I have always loved biology and it will follow me through being a doctor.
