My essay by Abigail - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
My name is Abigail Waling, and I am a rising high school senior with a GPA of 4.0I am applying for the Varsity Tutors College Scholarship Contest because I am passionate about pursuing my academic goals, and I would like to share what motivates me and how I stay focused.
What motivates me to pursue my goals is my dad and music. My dad is currently deployed overseas, and his absence has been a huge hit to my family and friends around us. When my dad left last year, he said to me, "Always fight for what you believe in and do what is best to achieve your goals." I knew that after he left, I had to do my absolute best in my academics and music.
I play the clarinet and plan on attending Texas State University or University of Incarnate Word to major in music and become a music therapist to help others. My dad has always been my mentor when it comes to standing up to hardships, and I have faced many in music. I remember that when I got first chair at my region concert, I tried so hard to make him proud while he is gone. He was the one good thing keeping me going and pushing me through the whole process. I would send him recordings of me playing so he could track my progress as well. I know without him and his motivation, I would not be where I am today.
Staying focused on my goals is not always easy, especially with my dad being away. However, I remind myself of his words and the importance of my dreams. I set clear, achievable goals and break them down into smaller tasks. This helps me manage my time and stay organized. I also find that practicing my clarinet is a great way to relieve stress and stay connected to my passion for music.
In conclusion, my dad and music are the driving forces behind my academic goals. His encouragement and my love for music keep me motivated and focused. I am determined to make him proud and achieve my dream of becoming a music therapist. Thank you for considering my application for the Varsity Tutors College Scholarship Contest.
