How Ms. Britt Kelly Shaped My Journey by Akeila - January 2025 Scholarship Essay
Ms. Britt Kelly, or as we affectionately call her, BK, has been a cornerstone in my educational journey, especially in the field of cosmetology. As a Black young woman navigating both the challenges of education and life, I’ve often found myself in spaces where I felt like an outsider, unsure of where I truly belonged. But Ms. Kelly, with her unwavering support and guidance, has not only helped me develop technical skills but has also shown me the power of mentorship, self-belief, and resilience.
Growing up as a Black woman in America, I’ve had to face unique challenges. From grappling with the weight of societal expectations to navigating spaces that are predominantly white, there have been times when I’ve felt isolated and unsure of my path. In many environments, there’s an unspoken pressure to prove myself worthy, as if my identity as a Black woman alone was a limitation. It’s a reality I’ve grown used to, but not one that I’ve ever accepted.
When I walked into Ms. Kelly’s cosmetology class, something shifted. I saw in her a reflection of myself—a Black woman who had made her way in a world full of obstacles. She didn’t just teach us the technical skills of cosmetology; she taught us how to take pride in ourselves, to walk confidently into any room, and to never shrink in the face of adversity. Ms. Kelly’s presence was a reminder that, as Black women, we hold power that’s often overlooked by society, but is undeniable when we choose to embrace it.
Ms. Kelly’s influence extends beyond the lessons of beauty and style. Her classroom was a space where I could truly be myself—no pretenses, no fears of judgment. She encouraged us to not only master the craft of cosmetology but to understand our worth in a world that often undermines us. She taught us that our beauty is not just on the outside, but also rooted in the strength, intelligence, and resilience we carry within. For me, as a young Black woman, these lessons were invaluable. It was the kind of guidance I had been searching for: someone who understood my struggles and offered not only the tools to succeed professionally but also the emotional support to thrive personally.
What stands out the most about Ms. Kelly is the way she broke down barriers for her students, especially those of us who come from marginalized backgrounds. She showed me that being Black doesn’t mean I have to settle for less, nor does it mean I have to navigate life alone. Ms. Kelly is a mentor who genuinely cares about her students’ success, both inside and outside of the classroom. Her influence reaches far beyond cosmetology; she has helped me learn how to advocate for myself, to demand respect, and to never let my skin color define the scope of my potential.
Ms. Kelly has shown me that education isn’t just about learning facts—it’s about learning who you are and where you can go. As I continue my journey in cosmetology, I carry with me not only the technical knowledge that she’s imparted but also the strength to keep pushing forward, no matter what. Ms. Kelly has equipped me with the tools to succeed, the wisdom to navigate a complex world, and the confidence to always believe in myself, even when the world around me may try to tell me otherwise.
In conclusion, Ms. Britt Kelly, BK, has had an immeasurable impact on my educational journey. As a Black woman, her mentorship has been a beacon of strength, empowerment, and pride. She has taught me to embrace my identity and my potential, and she’s shown me how to rise above the challenges that life throws my way. With her guidance, I’ve learned not only how to succeed in cosmetology but also how to live boldly as a Black woman in a world that often underestimates us. For that, I will forever be grateful.
