The Mentor Who Opened My Eyes by Alexa - January 2025 Scholarship Essay
When I think about a teacher who has truly impacted my life, Mr. Quillen is the first person who comes to mind. He’s more than just a teacher—he’s someone who strives to make a real difference in the world. Whether it’s through the lessons he teaches or the example he sets, Mr. Quillen inspires his students to think deeply, challenge themselves, and look toward the future with curiosity and hope.
I first had Mr. Quillen during my sophomore year for English class. One of the most memorable experiences from that class was when we read 1984 by George Orwell. That book changed the way I viewed the world. It opened my eyes to the importance of questioning authority, understanding the role of technology, and being aware of how the future is shaped by the decisions we make today. Mr. Quillen didn’t just teach the book—he brought it to life. He connected its themes to modern-day issues and encouraged us to discuss how we, as young people, could play a role in shaping a better future. That class sparked a passion for thinking critically about the world around me.
By my junior year, Mr. Quillen transitioned from teaching English to teaching cybersecurity. This change highlighted another one of his incredible qualities: his dedication to staying ahead of the curve and preparing students for the challenges of tomorrow. He’s someone who understands the importance of technology and how it’s shaping our world. Through his teaching, he made cybersecurity not just a technical subject but a window into understanding the balance between progress and responsibility. Learning alongside him was a unique experience, as he wasn’t afraid to admit when he was exploring new territory. It felt like we were on a journey together, and that sense of collaboration made the experience all the more impactful.
What sets Mr. Quillen apart is his unwavering belief in the potential of his students. He wants each of us to not only succeed but to make a positive impact in the world. He challenges us to think beyond ourselves and consider how we can contribute to society in meaningful ways. His passion for teaching and his dedication to helping others have left a lasting impression on me.
Mr. Quillen is more than a great teacher—he’s a mentor, a guide, and someone who inspires change. He has taught me to think critically, embrace the possibilities of the future, and strive to be the best version of myself. For all of this, I am deeply grateful.
